But it's already been said many times that the intent was for everyone to cool off. It wasn't about censorship at all, from what I've been seeing, just distance from the subject matter to regain perspective.

And it's also been said that we have young eyes watching. A huge, hateful brawl isn't exactly what we want in the forum. Let alone offensive content.

If the problem is young people watching, then create a forum section hidden from everyone who's under 18 and have all the polemic discussions there. Like a sub-forum in Open Discussions where the more sensitive subjects can be discussed.

To be fair, most of the comments here are about how OB1 and the Mod dealt with the situation. I don't think anyone has said they have a problem with the comment getting reported in the first place (though admittedly I haven't read every post in the thread).

EDIT: actually, I can see how my previously posted meme could be viewed as being against the reporter. I apologise if that upset anyone, it was not intended to do so, I have no qualms with whomever reported the comment and sincerely hope they stay here at the temple. We are generally a very accepting community, and I think this was just a minor slip up that has been blown out of proportion.

TotJO is a place for spiritual enlightenment, self discovery and discussion of many varied and wide ranging topics. Here at TotJO we debate arguments not personalities and ideas instead of people.

Post what you think is acceptable for an 8 year old to read (be it your own child or another) as this is in fact a family, and public, forum after all. If in doubt, leave it out.

Please note also that swearing is not the only way to offend. One can be just as demeaning and derogatory without resorting to swear words. These cases are as equally inappropriate and are covered under the same regulation on the forum.

I will be the first to admit that I am not the biggest fan of being PC. To me, it feels like going out of ones way to make up, what in my opinion are silly rules of not stepping on toes, just to keep people that are overly sensitive from being offended.

But, in the past few months I have seen lots of things that I'm not so sure I would want an eight year old to read. And many things that are offensive to people.

Humility and respect for others should be part of the Jedi way. Perhaps, instead of just ranting or trying to convince others the worthiness of what we might post, we ask ourselves what the post or thread offers to spiritual enlightenment or self-discovery? And ask, are we above apologizing to those we have offended?

And yes, people identify with personality types and will be offended by what we say sometimes. Even I have had to apologize at times.

I believe in spirit of the law and not necessarily letter of the law. Each case should be able to have it's own merit and at the same, reprisal. I'm not big on one rule and consequence covers all; because, I’m not sure we could ever write one rule that would accurately encompass all circumstances. There is a guideline for Moderators to follow and it is pretty lengthy and to be honest, I doubt many of us have looked at it in a while. But it covers a lot of what goes on and suggests ways of dealing with it. But they are suggestions… not “the letter of the law.”

[hr]

What I offer is this… rather than post whatever we like and expect no reprisals why not look at what we are about to submit and ask ourselves if it flows with the spirit of the place we are going to post it?

As we all know, Moderators are only human. We all have room to improve. And we will do things that others feel are mistakes from time to time. And sometimes a majority will agree and sometimes not. The real task is to learn from each incident and become better from the experience. Not hold on to the past and let it dictate our emotional state.

I just read this on Linkedin and have to post it!

An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that who ever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run they all took each others hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that as one could have had all the fruits for himself they said: ''UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?''

We've spent two days and 9 pages publicly discussing a disagreement between two people. Something that should have happened entirely via PM with maybe a public apology if that were deemed truly necessary. People have been on virtually every side of the issue and it has, with a few exceptions, been handled decently. I fail to see how this is anything but making people feel important. One could argue that that's the only purpose this has served, to make someone feel important.

Now I personally see it as an opportunity to discuss our current procedures and learn from the events, but I could see the argument.
