the difference is that one studies the lighter side, as in happiness and keeping peace, whilst the other teaches a slightly darker view...how do i put this(STAR WARS!!! example) say we take a jedi and he has done his training...then he wishes to learn more, here we accept lots of jedi and even sith are here, but that jedi will learn the darker parts of life, or the sith life. which makes them a gray, or shadow because they live by both sides, both lives, and that makes their training harder if its not done right

So, one of the greatest minds currently alive cannot be a Jedi? Im referring to Stephen Hawkings...

Should he want to call himself that of course...

If he bent his mind toward the arts of the Jedi he certainly could be a Jedi, even a Master, however he would need to hone that admittedly great intellect to those areas of Jedi concern and dedicate himself to the training of bettering those Jedi who can go out in the world to carry out the ideals in day to day life as he can not.

The point isn't whether Steven Hawkings wants to be a Jedi

It's what these ideals are that he could not live out.

Perhaps your looking at too limited interpretation of the ideals I presented. An inability to live up to the ideal is expected to a degree, that is why its an ideal. However the inability to live up to it to the best of your ability is laziness. If Mr. Hawkings is simply not willing to take the time to be a Jedi I have no problem in not saying he is one. It's as simple as that.

Can one be a Jedi without knowing they are a Jedi? Merely following the creed and code but without actually knowing the name?

The Creed and Code alone, IMHO, no. But there were Jedi before there were people calling themselves it surely. Also one can be "Proto-Jedi" that is the idea before it became manifest and the root of its inspiration.

Any historical figures you see as being Jedi without being "jedi"?
