I have used so many usernames, things relating to old gods, things from different myths, things from D&D and other games, even names that are just random gobblings of letters that seem to fit together, and are pronounceable in English. I've always wanted a different name, a different life.
I never used my real name, because it isn't who I was, it was a name given by my father, because he wanted a little him, so he gave me his name, made me to learn his trade, and only allowed me to enjoy his enjoyments.
I have been soya since the middle of 2006, a group of friends didn't like the name I had chosen for myself, so they got together and gave me a new name, more indicative of my personality.
I still go by my real name in real life, I get asked if I made it up, or where it's from, what it means, why I changed my name (because it couldn't be something my parents gave me!), everything.
I am currently attempting to take my name, make it me, really get people to go "Oh, you're ***?" and not speak about my father.
In short, I use my username, because I do not feel a connection to my real name, but I'm trying to change that, and may change to my real name here, shortly, in the future.

Never have had a total affinity for my given name. I tolerate my first, don't care at all about middle, married into my last.
Twilightwalker has kinda always been there in the backroom. Twilight is my favorite time of day overall. It is also a nod to my Native American side. If I were to have a "secret" name, this would be it.

While I may use a Username on the outside, I will always introduce myself on a Forum with my real name. I too have thought about this issue before as I do not want to be known as "Padawan Element" or any of the other Usernames I have might have used before when joining Jedi and Sith Temples (except for Sith and I always am Larken).
Still, Usernames are there to protect those who shy away from giving out their identities freely. It's the same as people not using their real picture but rather a quote, funny image, or something that reflects a hobby or possibly something just a tad more personal. It's all just an identity-thing. Once people get to trust others more then they will open up and become more familiar as their true selves and not the names and images they hide behind on the computer.
Dunno...never gave it too much thought as it never really bothered me. Still, I see your point.

MdK oOma is my "artist" name. I'm a musician and I use it for 20 years now (it was BEFORE I knew internet).
It comes from a joke in french. I try to explain :
oOma comes from my first "serious" group that a friend an I founded : oOma men
this friend and I used to make short humorous vids where my character used to make bad jokes and my friend was laughing like a fool. So we took the names of MoDiKon (maudit con can be translated by fuc...g as..ole) and MorDeRir (mort de rire is for laughing out loud) and we shorted that for MdK and MdR.
I always kept MdK oOma (with the caps) for all my musical production and after for my internet identity.
As you can see, nothing serious here.

Hi all my Real life name is Ben, I chose my name like a lot of others here from the Star Wars books, I chose Vergere because of her views, beliefs and actions. She was on the "evil" side but spent alot of time helping the "good" guys. She played both sides against each other to try and let both sides "win".
I see her as someone who embraces and accepts her own contradictions enough that she can always remain true to herself, which is a personal goal for me and I think she sums up my views well.
I did have some concerns about not being taken seriously for having a username chosen from the fictional Star Wars but in the end decided to stick with something that holds meaning to me {also I'm pretty technology impaired and the security element is reassuring }.
Besides like Vergere said when confronted over whether she was a sith or a jedi, "light and dark, are no more than nomenclature, words that describe how little we understand". We are all more than the titles we choose or are given so why tie yourself down to only one facet of yourself.

Namaste.
My username 'Poy' came from a nickname my sister gave me as children. Then forth a few people who know me took up using it occasionally. My brother in law's sister called me poy-star one day,and after playing around with it alittle, i got poy starous.
This name represents me, as who i truly am,everyone and everything.Same as most, before i have gone with different names, the names of different gods or a whole new name.We gain many titles in life but they do not define us,we are still that same person by whatever name we have.
I also use this name so i have some privercy from people in my life who would only make fun or even take this the wrong way.My partner and children know i am jedi but i feel some may not be ready yet.

I, too, appreciate my privacy on the internet, so I chose a nickname.
When I joined TotJO, I was busy wasting hours playing the videogame, Fallout: New Vegas, and my character's traveling companions were a battered robot and a cynical doctor named Arcade Gannon .
I also spent many afternoons at local video arcades as a kid, playing pinball machines and stand-up games (Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Marble Madness, Moon Patrol, Gauntlet, Paperboy, Star Wars, etc.).
And I have always liked the name Cade.

My username has meaning and then not so much meaning... Lmao
I am addicted to hello kitty (hello) in front of my name....
And then when I first started dating Adam (Lykeios)
He started calling me NIJI which is Japanese for rainbow because I am always so colorful and somewhat bubbly so it just stuck!
Everywhere I go people call me Sammi or NIjI so I love it

I simply chose to use my legal name as it is the identity most commonly known to me. Besides, it's a nice fit.
Jason means, "One who heals"
and Wilkins connects me through my fathers of ancient lineage as far back as the Viking invaders of Angle-land. It reminds me that I am more than just this body. I am the present incarnation of all who came before me.
I am also called simply, "Jace" by my more lazy friends.

This name has been with me for more than fifteen years and more people use it than my birth name, which I never really cared for, to be honest. Call it out in real life and I will react, which doesn't always happen with my legal name.
Why do we use them? Probably because on the internet it's easier to create and be the one you feel you really are, the daily life doesn't always present that opportunity.
