Username and why we use them ?

Just a simple question,

Why do we use usernames? I know what they are of course.

But why do we use them? When joining TOTJO I thought about the username issue but decided if I was to go down this path I would use my own name, after all I have had it for a very long time.

So should we use our own name or should we have a username, do some of us hide behind a username?

I understand that at times we do not want to use our birth name, but at other times why would we not use it?

SORRY, but at times I get these questions in my head and I wish to share them with others and get their opinion.

I am not an authority on this subject, of course I don’t expect people to justify why they use one I am just very interested in the philosophy of the username and why it’s used.

There must be many many reasons as to why we use one and what they stand for, if you are happy to share this information I would be very grateful and it would be the start of another answered question.

:) Thank you in anticipation for your help. :)

Take care, MTFBWY ALL.

Your user name can be your real name. Some want to register and participate as a guest anonymously before they decide they want to become a member and take The Oath. Some just want a Jedi Name.

I've always used my real name (John).

There's probably a multitude to reasons for members having a user name that is not their legal name. Some have not even thought about it.

If anyone wants to change to their birth name we are happy to do it.

This is my second draft, as I was unhappy with the first draft, it never made it to this thread.

My real name is James Foster... My moniker, Jestor Ams-fe, is an anagram of my real name. I choose the name Jestor, after much thought.... I went through many other on-line names, since \"Al Gore\" invented the Internet... I have had this name for almost 10 years..... Even in the physical world, there are some here who refer to me that way....

A court jester was more than the entertainer for the king, he was also a advisor..... He had the king's ear more often than most.... If the jester thought the king was wrong, he could tell him so, in a round-about way.... If it angered the king, he could simply say,\"What do I know? I am but a fool...\"

This is very similar to the way I deal with supervisors and people in charge....

With technology constantly making strides, to give too much information, to an unknown entity, is to invite identity theft....

Name, city, state, zip.... An unscrupulous person may try to take advantage of what he can get....

Internet safety protocols for children tells them, besides the basic no-name, no-number, no address... Advises things like not even city names, street names, school names, state names, no doctors, teachers, parent occupations, keep it as generic as possible....... Look it up in the Neighborhood Watch information...

A stalker, (in this case an unscrupulous person), who steals identities, keeps track and records your info for illegal uses.....

This was/is my main reason, security......

My info was slowly added as I felt comfortable... If you look for it,  my given name appears here and there..... (now I will have to go see what info I have entered, but I do check it periodically...)

Most titles are given by others, our birth names were as well... I have had several titles, and several names, all assigned to me.... But is that who I was? Sure, to some...

In some cultures, your name changes as you age.... Child name, adult name, baptismal name, name change with marriage...

How many chances do you get to choose your name?

As we Alan Watts says, we are defined by what we do..... An apple tree makes apples.... A jester makes people laugh....

I'm going for the laughter...... ;)

On walk-about...

Sith ain't Evil...
Jedi ain't Saints....

B) Now thats what I call an answer.

Thank you so very much for that information, that gave me the opportunity to think, investigate, ponder & think again.

I now feel that I may have added far to much information !!!! I am very strict at school with regards to the information that the pupils are allowed to add, and I supervise my own children very closely .

I have just checked my profile on here, and I have just about offered all information that you will ever need!!!! damn I am clever.

With regards to a username, the more I think about it I am not sure that I could come up with one !

I will now think about my information and it would be a good idea if I removed some, however, I may need some help to do so.

With my photo and information on the site, I may need to rethink the whole idea.

Thats why its good to ask, the more information that you get the wiser you become.

Thank you again ;)

Speaking for myself, I too thought long and hard about which username to choose. I usually have a few on other sites but in the last few years I have just been using my name. After all, that's who I am! I have spent many years becoming comfortable with who I am and what I do and have no worries about people knowing I am Jedi, or Pagan, or what my favourite films are (Facebook is a mine of useless information!!) so I'm quite happy to have my real name in my sig and on this site.

So when choosing my username, and in the spirit of transparency that is the Jedi way, I chose to use my name, Mark, but with the addition of \"Anjuu\". This is Japanese for \"leaving peaceably\" and reflects my intentions and nature. As has been said, it's rare to be given the opportunity to choose our name and accepting myself as a Jedi meant that I wanted to honour this with my name. It's old magic that says something is defined by its name and this name suits me well!

lets see..
I have not much usernames, and are all around the same... 666 , ale_666, ale666.
part of my name, and part my birth date

why we use usernames..., just why not.

mine is not a jedi name, its a username that I used for years... and show... more than me than any other username
like, that duality between evil 666 and my birth date,

I don't need even a nickname, but in internet is more common to be used than your real name.

I don't need even a name... I like to be know, because my actions and not because my name.
