If we could collectively change are wasteful ways it would go far. That's my goal for 2014. Appreciate what I have instead of always wanting more. Not an easy goal in such a materialistic society.

I don't know enough about this to make a proper comment on it, more research on my behalf would have to be done, but from the surface it seems these guys may be on the right track.

I wouldn't jump in with both feet, like I said I haven't done much research, I would be interested in hearing the opinions of others that have.

Yup, wouldn't take much effort to make a big change now would it.

Curbside recycling collection only started 30 years ago. Geothermal, solar, wind power were started by hippies.

Progress is slow.

Leandros Von wrote: What do you think of the idea that natural disasters are caused by negative human intention, in that the planet is as you say "shaking off some of the lice", could it be possible that as a conscious energy the planet is using it's own ability to bring about new balance as the will of our species becomes more and more obsessed with the destruction of natural resources?

I entirely agree with this idea. We are seeing unusual changes in weather patterns and some pretty impressive displays on Nature's power lately, and I don't believe it is a coincidence. I can see the planet reacting to our destructive behavior in the same way our bodies use a fever to combat an illness. Turn up the thermostat until the bad things die, then return to balance.

We're all organisms in the same system, and the rest of the system just may decide to do without us for a while.

I think if we focus on what we can do with our oun lives and in our own little piece of the wrld in place of talking about everythig else we can make things better. What do you do to stay in harmony with nature?

AHH! a topic I like. ^.^

In harmony with nature... well that might not be as easy as it sounds.

In any case we cant go back to being a tribe.
As it stands our population is at about 7 billion and growing. It would be a complete disaster if 7 billion people started to hunt and gather for food. So we cant be harmonious that way.

Another issue is that we grow all our food. This take up A LOT of space and its also the backbone of our growth as a culture. The more food we grow, the more people we get, the more land we need to grow food for those people.
SO! we cant be harmonious if we keep taking land for more farms. Nature needs that land for well...nature.
The other problem is that almost NONE of you have been taught to live differently. So we would all have to learn or invent some new way of life.

One thing is for sure that if we want to live in harmony with nature we cant keep living the way we are now. =/

I keep hearing that we're not living in harmony with nature, but I'm not sure that we are in disharmony. Okay, so sometimes human interaction has pushed out species, but that's kind of how mother nature rolls. Ants invade and kill off other critters, plants invade and crowd out other plants, viruses invade cells, etc.

We're also not the only species who drastically changes our environment. Beavers, ants, locusts, carp, etc. all have been known to cause trouble either by wiping out food sources or by flooding the land. It's not bad. It's not good. It just is.

Although, I am very much in favor of checking our behavior and trying to do better. I just don't think we're as bad as some might have us believe.
