Both my grandparents fought in WW2 also, Palestine, Greece, and the Pacific theatres. At the start it was a long way away, but they did so because they realized mechanization was for the first time enabling military power to serious new levels which required strategic intelligence, above emotional local level ignorance.

The dark side of technology is that it makes the 'evil' application of war fighting so much more dangerous then ever before. A good example is China's invasion of Tibet. They'd been trying for over a thousand years to rule over Tibet, and often did so, but eventually the distance and terrain meant they could not hold it - until mechanization, and Communist China was able to leverage this simple advancement in technology to take, but of difference to hold onto Tibet ever since. It is why Nazi Germany was able to steam roll over most all of Europe and large parts of Africa so quickly, and indeed how the US and Russia was able to push them back just as quick.

Technology has come a long way since then, so I'd guess the stakes are a bit higher now. Weapons of mass destruction and miniaturization mean war is no longer necessary. Terrorism is now the same thing as war.

The key is knowledge, finding out what is going on and then making decisions based on that knowledge. The most valuable bits of knowledge will always be kept secret because it's value is that it dictates strategy, and strategy is ineffective if it is known before it is applied. Picking holes in a better then worse outcome because it was not the best possible outcome is ignoring that the worse outcomes were avoided, but luckily in the West at least we get some tools to control who is making those decisions, even if we do not get to see the reality behind them.

Introverted extropian, mechatronic neurothealogizing, technogaian buddhist.

Gaddafi was also the only Arab leader in history to apologize for the slave trade. Allahu Akbar, until we meet, brother.
