In the Simple Oath there is a promise to uphold the Jedi teachings.
How can a novice promise to uphold something he doesn't know or fully understand yet?
The answer is not as simple as it seems lol

We evolve.

Understanding what these things mean comes later, after they have been internalized and we have built up experience trying to apply them.
Also why doing something the best we can, every time. It reinforces the best of ourselves.

This is why taking the oath was actually moved to being taken After finishing the IP.

Makes sense and frees more time for actual understanding. I see what you mean Brother Proteus, Thanks !

Isn't that why they made that a requirement at the end of the IP instead of beforehand? I rather like that change.
And I still haven't taken the Oath yet just because it seemed like I'd want to have my hands around a thing before making promises regarding that thing. I get nervous about people that jump into something blindly... are they going to finish what they started? I don't want anyone to question whether or not I knew what I was signing up for.

I don't feel anyone should be making such oaths until the night of their Knighthood. And even then it should be worded as such to directly connect to the Temples Doctrines, not the "Entire Jedi Path" because the entire "Jedi Path" is extremely varied and different depending on where you go or who you talk to both positively and negatively.
Just me though

The Simple Oath is fine as it is. But, I would rather it not exist. People do not ever have the power to make such promises. But, we could make a promise to try. Which is why I'm "fine" with it.
The Solemn Vow should NOT be to Knighthood. It should be to the Temple itself. I felt spiritually violated when I was required to rescind my Knighthood oath to remove my membership from TOTJO. Read that again. It is NOT ok that, in order to leave and be a Knight in my life, that I should have to say that I am not a Knight.
If the Solemn Vow had said: "Be a Knight at TOTJO and promise to do your best to emulate the Jedi principles in your service to the temple as long as you are a Knight here" then that would be hunky dory!! In fact, I'd probably cry with happiness.
But, lo--, that isn't how it is.
