the problem, alluvius, is that not everyone on a site this big will get the memo, so to speak, or even agree to the tactic. so people would still engage him, and he would still get that negative attention he craves.

this is not my first online forum, nor do i imagine it is yours. i learned long ago that, unless the forum is small enough to present a unified anti troll front, exclusion will not work. this forum is not small enough. so i called him out on it, betting that he would lose his cool at someone 'so horribly' calling him a troll, of all things holy.

he was good, i'll give him that. quite intelligent. and if he had actually admitted any fault at all, actually changed his views even slightly instead of continuing to preach to us all from the very first post, then he wouldnt have been a troll.

oh well.

This is really my first on-line forum...

lol, seriously...

But, as its on the internet, it must all be true... So, contradictory statements confuse me somewhat... Until I realize we are all saying the same thing, just differently..lol..

(ren, is that you?)

We do provide a unified front, somewhat...

We just have to agree on how to deal with people like him, and everytime one of those type people come here, I am going to ask for the rules of the questions...

Like I did in his "Three questions for Masters" thread...

http://www.templeofthejediorder.org/forum/General-Discussions/77729-Three-Questions-for-Jedi-Masters

He never did answer it...

Excellent...as long as there are ground rules, that should help minimize the collateral damage of logical fallacies flying about.

I had two points in saying what I did:

1) First and foremost, where there is a will there is a way, if our leadership came together with the intent of finding a way to set the "ban hammer" aside for a more useful solution, then they would be able to find a way to get the community in line with that solution. But before they can find a solution, they have to want to find one. And it would be as ineffective as you say shunning would be if they were not all "on the same page" with an alternative solution.

2) In terms of getting the "memo" out to the entire community; there are rules of conduct which we all must read as part of our basic training course. All you have to do is add a "how to deal with trolls" section. You would limit the people who have a valid "excuse" to not "respond correctly" that to to only the ranks of Guest and Temple Member. Add to that the unified front from the admins and mods as stated above, and you get a few people being PMed over being trolls from time to time, and the ones who care, stop and the rest are shunned until behavior is corrected.

Size is not a valid excuse...again, where there's a will there's a way. We simply have to actually try to be the Jedi we claim to be and work toward a solution born of understanding and compassion, rather than one born of force (and that's force as in "might", not force as in The Force. ;)

Hmm...interesting premise. It has promise. Something something remiss. Couldn't think of another almost rhyme.

Is there already a 'how to deal with trolls' document somewhere? I agree with alluvius that an attempt at a more unified front is warranted.

I'm not saying that it does not exist, but I haven't seen one. I have seen several documents that deal with our own conduct, but no "helpful tips" for how to deal with others, as Jedi, who do not attempt to control themselves...

The Council did not initiate the suspension. It was discretionary with the admin for being condescending to a member after a warning. The Council has not considered this and it's not come to that.

It's been about twenty-four hours so I'm lifting the suspension. I believe that's reasonable.

usually when dealing with a "spoiled brat" mentality ignoring the offender works as long as everyone ignores said offender...if even 1 person doesn't ignore then the offender uses that as "fuel" to carry on....

as jedi should we really need documentation telling us how to act?...personally i'd like to think that we are mature enough to know how to avoid getting wrapped up in trolls...of course there is some amusement in watching a troll get trounced using their own tools against them...
