Yes but for some, physical discipline/ public humiliation have no effect...it simply fulfills the attention they were seeking...

My younger brother did many things to get any sort of attention that enabled him to step out from what he perceived as my shadow ...even if it meant he had to face a beating...

Yeah, I wasn't advocating it as a solution, just feeling a bit nostalgic and had to say it.

Br. John wrote: Hi people in Colorado and Washington. How are things since marijuana became legal?

The City of Seattle more or less decriminalized marijuana 10 years ago, making it the city's lowest law enforcement priority, and people were rarely prosecuted for carrying small amounts of marijuana meant for personal use.

From Wikipedia: "Seattle, Washington: Initiative 75, passed by the 58% of Seattle, WA voters in September 2003, requires that "the Seattle Police Department and City Attorney's Office shall make the investigation, arrest and prosecution of marijuana offenses, when the marijuana was intended for adult personal use, the city's lowest law enforcement priority.""

Since then, the city, King County (where Seattle is located), as well as a number of independent organizations, have increased the availability of (honest) drug education programs and the amount of resources for people with addiction issues. These programs/resources are closely tied to and promoted by other (often free of charge) health clinics, which help people with mental health issues, STDs, and so on.

I think voters were comfortable when the ballot for legalization came through (in part because of the progress that's been made in the last 10 years) and were satisfied that the universe wasn't going to implode if legalization occurred. It was also generally agreed upon that a ton of time and money were being wasted on marijuana possession convictions, so we legalized it.

Thus far, everything has gone smoothly in terms of the transition. State government still has a few things to work out on their end (agreements with marijuana farmers and such), but by the beginning of next year anyone over the age of 21 will be able to show ID and purchase marijuana and/or marijuana edibles at specialty shops. There are already a bunch of new shops opening, but I don't know what they're selling (if anything other than medical marijuana).

I was at the Solstice Parade/Festival yesterday, and a fair percentage of people were hanging out or walking about naked, smoking pot. Seattle also holds Hempfest every summer. Those who have strong feelings against drug use, diverse expressions of sexuality, and rain are better suited to locations outside of Western Washington.

Floridas upcoming ballot has an initiative to legalize medical use...the state government is looking towards the states that have already done so to see how and what they did.....

Edit: it's actually to legalize medical use and recreational use....there's also an initiative to decriminalize it...one way or another tax dollars will be freed up to deal with real criminals...

Thanks, RyuJin. I knew nothing about that, but am interested in seeing how it works out and how its implemented. Almost half the states have legalized medical marijuana now (I think?), so there should be a good amount of data available for Florida to work with.

EDIT: Medical marijuana is legal in 18 states and DC . Not quite half yet, but still a significant number.

Looks like I'll be off to Malaysia before long. Thanks to the stoners for driving me out of the land of my birth, in which my ancestors fought for wearing blue, grey, and green.

My grandparents fought for america as well....they fought to protect the FREEDOMS we have, not to PROHIBIT people from enjoying their freedom....I'm a veteran myself...my great grandparents fought against america for their view of freedom...

If anyone feels that prohibition is better than freedom, then by all means exercise that freedom to go somewhere more restrictive...

There are many policies I don't like, but they are outnumbered by the many things I do like...no one is required to stay anywhere they don't want to...

Yeah, I'm proud of what my great-great uncle fought for, but I'd probably get banned for bragging about it.

I will have to. I just can't stand weed. I know what it does. Usage should be prevented, not encouraged. Culture is encouraging it more and more, and laws are getting more and more permissive.

You're letting past negative experiences influence present views....I've witnessed no negative effects, but I do know that there are a few...

You'd rather slaughter the herd because one animal ate too much and got sick than to evaluate the whole and determine rationally what happened...

While we're at it let's just prohibit all casinos because a marginal number of people have gambling addictions....and forbid chocolate because some people develop diabetes eating too much of it....

And slavery was an abomination of american history btw....

I guess I can't transfer what I have seen to you, so I respectfully agree to disagree.

And I didn't mean the CSA, though I did have ancestors in its army.
