Hello There! My advice to you would be to express your concerns with the local law enforcement, with any luck they may increase patrols in the area which generously should make it feel a little more safe, otherwise I find that the most vulnerable places to strike your attacker, is the groin or neck hell... even go for the eyes!

ANYTHING can be a weapon, remember that!
-I might sound paranoid by admitting this, but I always look around to gain a general knowledge of my environment including exits, weapons, and stuff like that...
Always being prepared can provide an advantage.

Women should learn Wing Chun. It was developed by a woman and it caters to female strengths (center of gravity, hip/leg positions). It also is an art form for those who can multi-task which women are more adept. It's all about efficiency.
