I am a huge Joseph Campbell fan. I was brought up Catholic and lived the first part of my life as a Christian, the middle part an athiest. It want untill I joined here and learning about Joseph and his wonderful take on mythology and his love of it that it all made sense. So anything by him. No other person do I relate to more than him.

There is a song by a band called "Disturbed" that has a song called "The Light' and two of it's lyrics are "sometimes darkness can show you the light" and "don't let hope become a memory".
A lot of people have anxiety issues, depression, paranoia, and other sorts of personal issues. I, myself, am one of those. I really appreciate the "darkness" quote because it's just like "there's a light at the end of the tunnel"; This, to me, means that no matter how hard you are having right now, you can always get over that bump and move on. For example, let's say I were to get fired from my current job......this could be a good things because maybe I wasn't happy in that job and while i got fired (the negative), this will now give me a chance to find another job that I will be happier in (the positive).
As for the "memory" quote, this is something that a lot of us can DEFINITELY relate too. A lot of us have hopes and dreams; whether it is to find a better job, a better career, hit a weight loss goal, graduate, etc, it is something that a lot of us have done in the past. I'll give you my example, I don't mind sharing. I'm 27 years old and weight 290lbs. My whole life, I have been a big girl ( Puerto Rican food will do that too ya, LOL!) and have tried countless times to lose weight. The few other times that I have dieted, been to the gym, cleansed, etc, I have always hit a wall and lost my motivation. When I first heard the song I spoke about here, I have always heard that quote and said to myself "heh, sounds like me with the gym and losing weight" while feeling down. To me, the hope of losing weight, was then a memory like the song says.
Well, that changed in February. I have been going to the gym for 2 and a half months now and have already lost 13 pounds. Not only have I been doing so, I have also changed to a high protein diet and have been eating healthier and it has made me feel so much better. That song, as silly as it sounds, keeps me going when I feel like "I'm too tired from work" to go to the gym. I don't want these past 2 and a half months to be "a hope I had" memory. I want to achieve something.
So, yeah, this is some of what I use to motivate myself. I also have a few others that I'm sure others use like:
"don't let this bother you, tomorrow is another day"
"don't dwell on what happened, the past is the past"
"let the bad go, focus on the good"
and other cheesy things, haha!
I love everything i've read on this thread so far, you guys are so inspiring!

I think I just tend to keep in mind the relevant result for the effort and weigh how they are tracking in relation to each other, and so if anything... its probably "we'll that makes things interesting".
Which come to think about it makes me sound inherently terribly selfish!!! Being 'reward, else curiosity, else bust'. But perhaps accepting that is important and its the action of awareness and decision making which defines us more

Since joining here I have been using the Jedi code as I connect to it very personally.
BUT, before that and one I still use:
"Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end"

I'm working on an affirmations sheet for CBT as part of my side-training.
I'm a big fan of "I will rise above" and "I will grow from this".
A friend of mine's one is "I am <firstname> m'f'ing <last name> and I got this."
