Most of the threads I've started are intended as journal entries at some point? When people post I think about what is being said and someday I'll use the essence of what I got from the threads in my journal. I look at my threads as a way of refining my thoughts with input from members. I get the discussion I desire without cluttering up my journal or anyones else's. :)

The problem with this is, and I think Opie said so recently, that the world is messy... lol...

We need to break eggs to make omlets, we need to get dirt on our faces to make flowerbeds...:)

I have made so many statements in my life, that later I get called out on, but, at the time, I thought I was correct, and was/am willing to put it on the line and be tested, lol...

My thoughts are not always so refined, (actually, Im lucky to string together good thoughts, lol) and to put them down, I see what I meant to say, and can correct myself in further renditions of my posts...:)

it like having agreat book, and holding onto it, becasue of the goodness inside... But, it might help others if you were to share...;)

Just as you learn from what others post, others learn from what you post...;)

And why you got a PM from me one time...;)

On walk-about...

I wasn't clear with what I ment. I start threads OUTSIDE of my journal and are for open thought and discussion. My resulting thoughts and reflections, if any, are intended to go into my journal and not for open discussion.

See, clear as mud. :cheer:

I think the point Ren was making is that there is a difference in comments. As already noted throughout this thread Rank and Intention make a difference and give allowances. There is a clear difference in what kind of replies are generally accepted. This is the unwritten part of that rule.
  • There is a difference between commenting on what someone posted - I disagree with you're point of view type stuff. And derailing the journal's focus. Ren's point of the rule.
  • This is different than a reply noting a miscue. Or technical issue. Someone pointing out a topic was misposted. The type of reply this thread was created from.
  • And both of these are different than a Knight/Master replying to dig deeper into the thoughts presented by a Student in the IP. As stated by Jestor - it is about keeping it educational and on topic of the IP. Thus why Educators are more welcome to comment.

Really the same thing as been and is being said. And I haven't seen anyone break the rule in the spirit it was created. I haven't seen anyone reply to a Journal in a manner which would cause someone to 'confuse their line of reasoning with someone else's.' Personal opinion on comment or don't varies, but the affect is the same. You will still get Thank Yous. You will still get Jestor poking you with a stick. You will still get Private Messages. But you won't get someone coming in willy-nilly saying, - bah! You are wrong and here is why (when they are at equal level). At least - I haven't seen any of that. *shrugs*

Honestly, I'd prefer nobody write in my journal. The only reason I let the "higher ups" slide is because I can't stop them--their site, their rules, and they think they're helping. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it is on topic with the thread, and other times it gets things off-course.

I'd much prefer a pm, though. Even from the grand poobahs.

Jestor wrote: And by 'crap', I mean conversation not necessarily geared toward the IP... A discussion on a lesson or a thought, that might further explain a point of view, I look at as less of an issue than some posts which are just chatter...:)

I went to look, to make sure I spoke correctly...

The IP stated in its first incarnation, posted March 2010....

It has been policy since I started...

Kana Seiko Haruki wrote: There is nothing wrong in reading other peoples journals (as long as you don't intend copying them) however – whilst there are no rules against replying to journals – its preferred that non raked members do not post in the journals belonging to others.

ren wrote: There is no official prohibition. I put that notice there years ago because there had been a couple of occasions when someone's journal had been completely overtaken by flaming.

There is no "rule" for that, we simply prefer and encourage that people who aren't teaching masters abstain from posting in there, however there is no prohibition and in fact some people, like Opie, may request that others share their thoughts in the journal.

Everything is as I said then? To prefer is not the same as to prohibit. The journal is there to attract potential masters and the whole purpose behind the IP is to weed out undesirables. A journal that goes unremarkably through the lessons will not attract a potential master. A challenge by a passer-by and a well thought-out answer can make a big difference imo.

It is also why the warning reads "THIS IS NOT A DISCUSSION FORUM. Please respect other people's journals." and not "please do not post in other people's journals".

Maybe sometimes respecting what someone spent time to do is to comment on it.

Convictions are more dangerous foes of truth than lies.

As I said, policy...;)

But you are correct, "no rule against"....

And, I also agree to the other thing you said about "a well thought out answer"...

I've left some posts in journals...;)

In a recent thread, "evil" is being discussed...

If a journal owner wrote they did/didn't believe in evil, and a guest responded in journal, and it flowed, I would probably leave it, but, if it was going to turn into a free for all, I'd nip it by asking for it to be continued in another forum thread..:)

Also, of a journal owner stated an opinion that was, uh, WAY out of joint, and had been discussing it via PM, the training master wouldn't know until the pre-appenticeship discussion...

There is arguments for, and against, ands grey area of enforcement...;)

This policy is more "gooey" than "prickly"... ;)
