Without pain, we wouldn't learn from mistakes. We would be doing the same thing with no consequence. No pain means no happiness, you can't have one without the other, that's how the force balances out.

From an evolutionary perspective, pain discouraged our ancestors from doing too many strenuous or dangerous activities that threatened their survival.

I see the purpose of this question, still I must express concern about responses that are given sometimes (not here so far).
Sometimes bad things are pictured as part of some greater plan or good in the end. Now, from an evolutionary perspective pain indeed must have been an advantage for it helped avoiding dangerous situations. Still we must not seek pain in order to learn something but rather learn from pain we had by accident and try not to try and learn the same thing again (which would sometimes be referred to as 'stupidity' rather than 'struggle for self-improvement').

Walking, stumbling on these shadowfeet
Part of the seduction of most religions is the idea that if you just say the right things and believe really hard, your salvation will be at hand.

I wonder of those like myself, who do enjoy the 'pain'.... I dontthink Im bad and need punished...
I have tattoos and piercings... I zone out, and dont feel the pain usually...
As well enjoy getting slammed to the mat in martial arts... MAkes me feel connected to my body, as I have a very high sense of body awareness..
And, something stupid, like seeing how close I can hold my hand to the flame... Endurance, mind over matter... Can I hold my hand there till it blisters? Most 'kneejerk' their bodies away from the pain... I am not as sure on this one... But I still do it... lol
Thats why my answer was 'understanding'...
