Radiation and its Perception

I wasn't addressing you Wendeline, lol...

More just posting some thought...

THe reason technicians wear stuff and go in the other room is because they do it more than a dozen times a day, 5 days a week... Each patient, only one "dose"...

Most times, the protection for you is unnecessary, but psychologically, it sets the patients mind at ease...

But you are quite right, in that there is some that takes less time for exposure to be bad...:)

Everything is bad for you in excess...meat, radiation, salt, etc....

However when in the right amount the very same things are beneficial....it's a matter of finding the right amount...

A spoonful of salt in a glass of water makes it undrinkable, while a spoonful of salt in a lake goes unnoticed - buddha

Replied by on topic Re: Radiation and its Perception
Radiation therapy is (in Germany) the main source of the exposure per year (statistically). They work with very high doses and they are dangerous if you are exposed to them on a regular basis. However in most cases the patience are very old 80+. So the effect of destroying the cancer and giving them 5 extra years of their lives is far more valuable than the extra dose on other organs which may cause a new cancer after 10 years.

@Phortis' pictures: gamma, x-rays and neutrons do not stop because of any matter, they may loose some energy but you can't completely stop them.

Coal power plants are the source of more ionizing radiation than nuclear power plants. Also, I'd like to see any industry consider actual waste + container for the waste + the whole plant + by-product that's less toxic than the naturally occurring stuff to be "waste" like the nuclear industry does... The problem with nuclear scientists and scientists in general is that they are too accurate and honest. The media picks it up and creates drama out of benign scientific statements.

Human beings are naturally radioactive. There's a unit for the measurement of radiation based on the radiation exposure levels of a single banana. (it measures radiation that gets absorbed by living tissue, not the total radiation of the banana)
It's about 0.1 micro sieverts.

workers at fukushima reportedly got 680 milisieverts exposure max. at 1000 there's a 5% "chance" of cancer. That's basically 7 million bananas. Quite a lot of bananas you'll tell me... not that bad when you take into account it's possible to compare radiation exposure for a grocer and that of a worker at a nuclear meltdown site with human-readable numbers....

Growing up around air force bases I was taught early about the harm potential of electromagnetic energy, and once on a US Destroyer the Captain told me he could cook a steak on the aft flagpole with his target illumination radar

I've always felt the signal from WiFi and cell phones in my head so I've avoided them. When I worked a about 2 years in real estate, I personally met 3 people who had brain cancer on the side where they held their mobile phones. Real estate agents have a habit of using their cell phones a lot, obviously too much. Food for thought perhaps!?

I like 'nanners

Nuclear technicians....I almost was one...when I joined the navy, due to my asvab scores and academic scores I qualified to take the nuclear technician exam...I failed by only 2 points...had I chosen physics instead of anatomy as a junior in high school I may have been one of the glowyguys...the world was saved that day :woohoo:

Now where are those glowy 'nanners ren mentioned? :woohoo:
