Yeah, he's also the guy who electrocuted elephants in attempts to prove that Tesla's work on AC was dangerous...

:( Really!?! That's just mean.

Stupid Edison...you know he wasn't even the first inventor of the lightbulb...I can't believe he would do that to an elephant (or anything else for that matter). Sicko.

That was in the name of Science. They didn't know everything back then either. Not much better now the things we do inthe name of science.Think how dumb we will look 100 years from now. We don't know what we don't know.

Or is that too philosophical?

Allineare wrote: I think science should help us develop our philosophy not conflict with it. Science is predicated on the understanding that theories will change as new evidence is presented to replace pre-existing ideas. Old philosophies need to change as science presents evidence to support that change. New philosophies should be an example of what we've come to understand as a result of science.

For those areas where we are uncertain or where science has not found answers, we should be careful of accepting a given philosophy as an absolute truth. It threatens our ability to adapt and apply reason when science catches up and begins providing evidence on the topic.

I'm prone to wax hyperbolic, but I agree with everything you said. ;)

That's the real trick isn't it? So often the goals are not the same.

Look at stem-cell research as a prime example. Sometimes dogma is placed above the advancement of knowledge and that's what needs to be neutralized if not eliminated by science.

Can science and religion work together? Yes. Are they likely to? I'd say not very often.

You'll see science and religion more closely with Jediism as it continues to grow as a movement than you'll ever see it with traditional religion unless said religion undergoes a major paradigm shift.

the truth is they can.

catholic hospitals?
they incorporate doctrine and ideals from catholicism
with the study and advancement of science

the truth is that science and religion can in fact work together

they just need to find a common goal

That's right! He did. Wow. I had forgotten that detail from college when I was writing about Tesla.

Edison was quite the brilliant narcissist.

During the period Thomas Edison had been vying for business with George Westinghouse, Edison maintained that his direct current (DC) was safer than his competition's alternating current (AC), and he had been routinely electrocuting dogs and cats with AC in public in order to convince people. So Edison took advantage of this dubious public-relations opportunity and killed Topsy the elephant with alternating current while capturing the event on film, which he later replayed for audiences everywhere. This process of killing animals for public display wasn't done out of science, but to obtain contracts to provide electricity to North America. Thats taking Greed to extremes...

Science or business that man was a sadist. Nobody who has ever spent anytime with any animal would willingly electrocute them (you know, unless they like hurting things). It just speaks volumes about what kind of a person he was.

that is actually something I got from here :)

Actually, I heard that he took notes and learned from his failures. He didn't gain success by trying the same thing over and over. He changed each try, if only slightly. If he had tried the same thing over and over then he would have just been the guy who invented the telegraph. :)

I think Einstein's quote still stands.

he tried the same methods more than once

but screw eddison

let me give you a different yet just as true example

I don't remember his name though

but this guy in his forties visits a sports center after 20 years
he looks at the bleachers and attempts to run from the bottom to the top
and fails

he realises he strength has waned

so he trains, he climbs the steps as slow as he can until he can do it at the speed he starts jogging

he did the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result in him reaching there faster or at all

is this insanity or perserveerance?

and what you said about delusions actually back MY point on stupidity

delusions are the failures in understanding or failures to accept a reality due to lack of information

it rarely involves emotion

insanity is always involved with emotion
