do I hate philosophy?
Modern philosophy lost the spark, philosophy had something that other academic topics didn't, this helped identify it and help it grow
but somewhere along the generations, something went wrong. The spark is there but not nearly on the level it used to be. I love philosophy, but the quotes and proverbs are about 10% to 1% of the entirity of philosophy.
what angers me is that now anybody can pull garbage out of anywhere and call it philosophy, simply because it's a quote on life.
now the questions you all have are probably " what are the 99% to 90% remainder of philosophy" the answer is simple, reaction...
how you react to philosophy is the great decider on philosophy
now let me clear something up
you can infact deem anything philosophy
I will accept that
but like any philosophy, it will be wrong at times
now you are thinking all kinds of questions and possibly feeling insulted
allow me to provide a factual explanation of philosophy
THIS IS NOT A PHILOSOPHY: this is a judgement taken from actual physical ideas and events.
now if you made it this far through my overly elegant convention I have provided you, awesome! if not, I don't blame you in fact if this wasn't such an issue, I would be like you wishing that this ass hole would shut up.
Philosophy is an idea or view on life, people and values, sometimes it will include an idea or view on ideas and views. or is it? the answer is technically no... Philosophy is the thought established by what I just described, the reaction and argument to an established convention on people, life Etc... Philosophy is what is life and people, my point is that no philosophy can "blanket" all lives and all people, my issue is that people (not people here, but it has happened) just accept philosophy, simply because some old famous guy said it so it must be true
NO NO NO that is betrayal of what philosophy is. Philosophy was a debate, an argument over ethics, morals and life. Thats what made it work, nothing was accepted at first, it was debated, a true philosopher never just presented an idea, it was a fully established front. But the philosopher of ancient times and sometimes if rarely modern, would understand that the only way this could ever been seen as true is through an argument against.
let me try to make this as simple as possible, if you really want to understand and respond to this, I think you should read the whole thing but at least read this!!!
I think people should argue anything they hear about philosophy (even this, if you think that I am wrong and would love to prove me wrong I am welcome to it)
when they don't we have fiascos that sometimes are yet to be challenged, an example would be Einstien, great scientist, but philosopher? yes and no
"insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results"
that isn't insanity, this is either stupidity or perseverance, insanity is the disconnection from reality due to emotional or psychological malfunctions.
philosophy needs to be argued, look at the ancient greeks and romans, the fathers of this wonderful way of thought, they would be appalled to see how we have treated philosophy (again, it doesn't happen here often, but I won't say it hasn't happened at all) philosophy is accepted on the basis that it sounds "wise" most new philosophies are rarely argued and just accepted.
even when the greeks knew it was right it was still argued, philosophy isn't quotes!!! it's discussion and argument, this is what I am trying to say
if you argue anything here this is it. Philosophy is an argument, to say that one philosophy defines all life is ridiculous! there will always be somebody who doesn't act, or live a live that agrees with that philosophy, all philosophies can be proven wrong, yet we accept them under names of "absolute truth" and the "ultimate answer". This is what angers me, I want people arguing again, not accepting it, it needs to be argued or it's merely pretty quotes and not philosophy by any measure.
I love all the things that are said here, many of them are beautiful, but none of it can accurately be called philosophy, by fact alone, because we accept it without argument.
its one reason I love this place, nothing I say is accepted, you always argue it and I like that, we form ideas together while maintaining the same ideas, but sometimes and I have seen it, where a post is made and people call it philosophical without argument.
Philosophy by modern example, is dying.
there are arguments, I am not saying there isn't, but this betrayal happens to often, even with my ideas.
I thank anybody who has taken the time to read this, everybody here has my respect and love.
this is just my thoughts on a sensitive topic to us all.

And we love you...

It can be difficult to find your place, when joining a new group, and there are a couple of ways to go about it...
One, and my perfered method, is to quietly come in, and see who are the players, and who is full of poop...
Two, is to come in and make a noise, saying here I am, take it or leave it...
And, of course, there are the subtle degrees in-between that always exist...

Is this post? Well, you have surmised a theory, and an opinion... I would say it qualifies...
Now, we will agree, or disagree... If we agree, we will not have one thing to say, and it will not measure up to your idea of philosophy, whereas if we disagree, it will...
Can we not agree?
According to Google,
Philosophy
Noun
1. The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, esp. when considered as an academic discipline.
2. A set of views and theories of a particular philosopher concerning such study or an aspect of it.
To discuss this, would you agree that these are accurate discriptions of the idea you are discussing?
The 'study', not an 'argument'....
Then, pretty much, discussing how the best way to tear apart a motor, and the 'whys' of it would fall into that area, yes?
We dont automatically argue, but we do discuss...
++++++++++++++++++++++
I would agree, many just chant the words of some great thinker... They do not give it the respect, and credit it deserves...
Instead, repeating it to make themselves appear wise...
But, as I told someone right after I joined, and they wanted to talk about philosophy as well, and "none of those tired old quotes from the greats" were to be used, presumably for a similar reason:
I said, " If I agree with 'one of the greats', and then why can i not quote them, using their words which generally are more eloquent than my own?"
If a quote is thought about, and agreed with, I see no harm in using the words of another...
But, I so agree, most prolly dont...
++++++++++++++++++++++
What sticks in my mind, is the 'bad' philosophies...
SSDD, (same sh*t, different day), is easier for folks to buy, than to say, "the sun will come out tomorrow", because, when we hope, and are let down, people get crushed/upset, and find it easier to just be negative, 'waiting for the other shoe to drop'...

So, I think philosophy exists in almost every place...
My boss loves "K.I.S.S.", "Keep It Simple Stupid"... Yes, I would qualify it as a philosophy as well...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
At another site, i was doing my assignments, and was ask for some favorite quotes I like, and try to live by...
One I choose was, "The ends, justifies the means"...
Now, my 'teacher' teacher [strike]argued[/strike], ok, insisted, that I didnt truly understand this concept...
Saying that I was meaning, "stealing is ok, if I want to be rich, right?"
"No..." I explained...
If I want to be smart, then I have to study....
If I steal, I have to be prepared for the possibility of jail, or at leas t a bad reputation...
If I want to be healthy, I have to take care of myself....
If I want a clear conscience, I have to live, and act, right....
Much of life's little philosophies depend on our points of view...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
As for absolut truths...
I have discovered:
1. I exist...
2. the time is "NOW"....
3. I am 'HERE"....
I cant come up with any more....
Since time is a man made idea, and needs to be corrected every four years on the leap year day, it has a falibility... and is not to be completley trust, so as to when 'NOW' really exists, I can only say 'NOW'... lol...
Here, well, I have much the same answer, because I cannot be sure, to 100%, that I am not in a jar somewhere floating,

Really, all I can be sure of, is I exist...

I'll agree with you on the stupidity point, but perseverance? If you're expecting a different result then wouldn't that fall under delusional? And aren't delusions a form of insanity?...because they are disconnected from reality or reality as we think we know it?
Unless of course you constantly punch a wall in hopes of one day breaking it down. Yes, the same action could result in different results, but punching a wall repeatedly until it breaks is probably a bit crazy in and of itself.
Or maybe it's just laziness? Yeah, yeah, yeah I'll fix that T.V. Hand me the remote. *click* Huh? Not working. *click* Hmmm.... *click* *click* *click*

I like to get into a good philosphical debate, but I think there is nothing wrong with science killing philosophy. I think it's fantastic. One day, it may kill off a lot of erroneous religious beliefs too.
But the human mind has been impressive (or ridiculous, however you want to look at it) with many people painstakingly adhering to religious beliefs that science has shown the fraud of.

For those areas where we are uncertain or where science has not found answers, we should be careful of accepting a given philosophy as an absolute truth. It threatens our ability to adapt and apply reason when science catches up and begins providing evidence on the topic.

I don't have anything against using quotes
I have something against the modern use of quotes, they rehash it or just say some crap

I understand that it's the study, but nothing is being studied
I went to philosoophy course, and my god.....
all it was is people saying crap they think is wise
and everybody else gives them a clap and says "aaah" or "hmmmm"
my point is it's no longer a study, its submissive people feeding the ego of either stronger or people equally as weak
