Why? was created by
I just got home from walking in the park before it started raining and passed by a 'Christian' Church with a sign and a sermon about homosexuality.........
WHY can't these so called 'Christians' be like Christ and stop obsessing about others lifestyle?
With all the problems in the world they continue to rant and rave about this when there are SO many other things to be concerned about..........
Must be why Jesus shunned most of the religious people of his day as well and hung out with the outcasts..........

Well, there is this text I read just a moment ago:
"Dear god,
Give faith to those who don't believe in you,
and remind those who believe in you that you are god, not them"
These people think they are god, they judge anyone they want...!

There's this thing called prejudice, you see...
Often it is hard to blame people for it, because it is so dependant on their upbringing...it is hard to change indoctrinated beliefs, which, let's be honest, is basically what upbringing is.
People will go to any lengths to defend their prejudices, because usually they know deep down that it is illogical, but they don't like to think that they are being nonsensical - so they try to justify it. Using religion is one way of doing that, because it is perhaps seen as marginally more acceptable to be prejudiced if you can blame it on your religion.
I'm not defending these sorts of Christians...I'm just trying to answer your question...

That's a really good question, it was supposed to be posted in my journal....
Oh I know all about predjudice, and in all honesty my upbringing would have put me right there with them had I not known better.
My beliefs may distance me from part of my family, but that's another story.
But here in Georgia they continue to beat this horse, on and on, the whole Chik-Fil-A thing, and with all the problems this country has going on......
It's just the outright hypocracy of it all.

You know...I have always interpreted the coming of Jesus as a wiping away of the fire and brimstone old testament for a teaching of kindness , compassion, forgiveness, and understanding of all people of the new testament.
I believe that some Christian groups misinterpret the Old and New Testaments like some Islamist groups misinterpret the Koran, and some Jewish groups misinterpret the Torah.
We must endeavor to resist the temptation to become angry and retaliatory to these groups. As Jedi we must lead by our example of mutual respect for all people no matter what their religion, race, sexual orientation, or whatever. We must overcome the urge to internalize the pain of the discriminatory actions of the weak minded. Remember that the detractors are scared and frightened children with no understanding of the truth, and possibly no desire to open their minds.
"FEAR IS THE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE"
"WISDOM IS THE KEY TO PEACE"

I assume that the sermon was bad? It wasn't like an attempt by the church to educate the more closed minded members? Just you only mentioned they had a sign saying sermon on homosexuality, not if the sign said something like "Come learn how to identify the satanic homosexuals". I have heard of more and more churches attempting to educate others about the fact homosexuality is perfectly normal, though sadly it's probably right to assume they weren't wanting to spread a positive message.
The impression I get is that these institutions keep up with the illogical belief against non-heterosexuals because it's something they can take a firm stand on, something they can 'control' in a world that is rapidly changing.

Honestly? It's because they're taught to bring people to God and if they don't the sin falls upon them.
That's why.
I'm not saying it's "right" and I'm not saying they do this the "right" way. I'm just stating the simple fact of the matter. Why they do what they do.
Religion of fear.
