What do you/did you want to be when you grow up?

There were really two things that I "wanted" to be when I grew up.
Which I don't think I ever really did! :P

First... I wanted to be a warrior. Not just a soldier in an army but a Cavalier, Crusader slash Samaria. I wanted to be the best warrior and lead troops into battles. But what little boy didn't want to be? All the kids in the neighborhood played "Army" and dressed up and fought each other. But we used BB-guns, carved sticks and fire-works. It was an insurance nightmare! :D But we had fun and no one ever got seriously hurt! I knew it would be hard to be the best because I was a runt. And there are so many good soldiers in the world. But like I was saying earlier... I didn't just want to be a soldier.

The other... I came from a messed up family. I wanted to be a good Father. I wanted a family of my own. And I knew that I would do a better job than my parents did! I didn't think that would be as hard. Boy was I wrong!

Turns out, I was a pretty darn good soldier and that was way easier than having a good family. I think that I am a pretty good Dad, but it is just me and my daughter. So, I get to play both roles. When you look back at what we thought as children and compare it to what is now... it is amazing just how wrong we were! I don't look down on my parents as much as I use to (but they are still nuts) and I don't value my ability to to fight as I once did.

2. What was hard/ what do you think will be hard?
3. why did you want that job/ why do you want that job?

1. Air Force brat here so it was always fast jet pilot since before I could walk properly.

2. Finding people who had a combination of both a good work ethic and also were not self serving.

3. fast jet flying is why; the tactical and operational aspects is the work but the flying is the living. Spatial awareness is existence, and flying something fast and maneuverable through 4 dimensions is a huge way of projecting awareness at a much more dramatic level then anything bodily or ground based, in my opinion.

Result; couldn't meet the medical for that job so just did whatever job I could to make as much money as quick as possible.

Really... I think I just wanted to be EVERYTHING when I was a kid. Not much has changed on that front. I want to to do so much that I never really have any opportunity to do ANYTHING.

Jack remained buried in her book. As far as anyone could tell, she'd gotten her wish from childhood.

'With a dreamy, far-off look...' Prompted Kakeru, despite the fact that he could NOT sing.

'And her nose stuck in a book...' Followed Tom, actually capable of hitting the notes but deliberately going out of key for the humor of it.

'Oh, grow up, you guys.' Sissy groused, 'Besides, in terms of a job, being like Belle from Beauty and the Beast isn't really the right answer to the question, given that she's going to college for a degree in philosophy to become a teacher.'

'Yes, because that's a good plan in terms of not getting into debt and getting a job.' James cynically and sarcastically commented. To which, the CMC, in perfect hypocritical fashion, responded,

'And, as we all know, money is the only reason we get jobs when we grow up. It couldn't possibly be because Selle Author wants to partake in a virtuous line of work, and make a difference in a society that has largely forgotten to think about the important questions. No, we choose an occupation to get paid. Obviously, nobody wants to become a philosopher. There's nothing you can DO with that degree. Except think.'

Jack rolled her eyes, and hoped that her mother wasn't reading her blogging over her shoulder. My, wouldn't that be embarrassing.

Like Reliah, I was one of those kids who wanted to be all sorts of different things. If my memory serves me correctly the list included:

Firefighter
Policewoman
Nurse
Rugby player (female, obviously)
Church of England Priest
Long-distance runner
Author

Two things that I really didn't want to be were a teacher, because I thought teaching was too girly and I was kind of a tomboy, or a singer or musician, because I didn't want people to think I was just copying my Dad.

So now...I have trained and qualified to be a teacher and ultimately I would like to be a singer. Hmmm. It's funny the way these things often turn out, isn't it?

When I was in 4th grade I had a journal entry where I had to write what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said I wanted to be a veterinarian, and work at McDonalds. I wrote I'd work 8 hours a day as a vet, then 2 hours a day/weekends @ Micky D's. I don't know why I wrote that, I was never really a workaholic- maybe I just like money and thought Micky D's would be my "fun" job. Over time my obsessive interest in animal welfare waned, and I also decided working at McDonald's would not be as fun as I had imagined.

As I got older I REALLY wanted to work for the CIA. That started to change when I learned more about history of the govt. in college.

I've always wanted to help people in a way that will make a lasting impact in the future. So, I ended up going into teaching. Which, at least at my current workplace, is very rewarding, because I got to do a whole year-long project on the subject of my choice, which was China. Now my students are all gung-ho about Chinese and Chinese culture, and I can't help but think I've set them on a good path. Perhaps I've planted a seed in one or two of them that will in time grow into an interest that will one day aid in intercultural relations, or something.

Other things I've wanted to be:
cosmologist (but I'm terrible with math and abstract visualizations)

soldier (I took the asvab and was planning on signing up with the air force, but then again, learned some history and decided joining the US military would clash with my values)

dog breeder (but there are too many dogs out there already that need homes! Why contribute to the problem?)

sex ed teacher (realized I only wanted to teach kids about contraception, and was totally uninterested in teaching about sex itself or STDs. This was during high school when there was a spate of teen pregnancies at my school. One girl was 13.)

foreign language teacher (didn't consider my language abilities to be up to a level where I could be a great language teacher. I'm starting to reconsider that now after teaching students some Chinese in my year-long)

Orthodox nun (decided I couldn't be a part of any entity that holds beliefs contrary to my internal ethical compass. Plus not Eastern Orthodox)

Theravada Buddhist nun (decided the living in world is more valuable than what I could gain as a renunciate)

There were two thins I wanted to be when I grew up: a soldier, and a fireman. My family served in the British Army and Royal Navy for the past five generations. I always wanted to continue the tradition, which I did for six years. The same can be said for firefighter, only I joined a volunteer station rather than paid as I was in school at the time. :)
