The fact is James that my issue is with a law taking away choice and forcing you to pay for stuff you do not want. That means if people want to deal with automation of all these jobs they have that right. But that is highly unlikely. You came in combative and making statements that spin things as going down the drain if we let people choose how they shop or get gas. That is silly and not the case. The what about the jobs comments are exactly what people said when we went from looms to sewing machines or any other tech revolution

I think I edited my last post as you were writing your reply.
Anyway,
I'm a known luddite, and I'm not persuaded that mass produced clothing and white bread hasn't destroyed humanity...soooo...
I also don't trust people. People will take the easiest option, generally, so if we let them "choose" to support jobs or do things on their phones....the grand unwashed dumbass majority will do the phone thing.
Freedom of choice is not always necessarily the best, wisest, or noblest option that promises the brightest future.

Indeed, gas attendant is an actual job. Typically a gas station will have a few attendants during peak traffic hours. It's like any minimum wage job: you have to apply, submit a resume, get some basic training, etc. There isn't a certificate or anything to my knowledge. And you don't tip them or anything (though I'm sure they wouldn't complain to the extra money). There is no service fee for having an attendant. Gas prices are pretty much the same as you would see in, say, Washington, so they don't simply jack up the price of gas.

Very few jobs are actually protected and require a certification. Medical fields, police, HAZMAT, etc require certifications. But there are a lot of certifications that businesses require for hire simply because they -want- to require them. Such as half a dozen computer related certifications that a guy with the internet and a love for the concepts can learn on their own without paying more than what's necessary to get an internet connection. There's even a certification here in South Carolina for Secretary. When I started in the world, all you needed was good communication skills and a free test that demonstrated how many words per minute you could type.
Businesses like certs, but most don't need them. Certs just make you competitive.

Just 2 cents from an Oregonian.
Oregon is weird.
Yeah, it's totally unnecessary for the consumer, I still get out of my car to clean my windows. It does however create quite a few easy entry level jobs, so the state subsidizes it to keep gas prices low. At this point, the uproar is because most Oregonians don't know how to pump their own gas.
