When I was little I often used to think about what would happen if you took someone from the ancient past and time traveled them to today and showed them around.

An extremely interesting experiment in perspective and sociology I think!

Then I found this today, which is not exactly someone from the ancient past, but certainly someone whose culture, values and life experience are vastly different from a typical on in our "modern" world. I was particularly struck by the highlighting of the heartlessness of killing an enemy you cant even see, and the sacredness of Maria Callas' voice.

Fascinating really. Oddly, it made me think of the words from the song Pocahontas sings in the Disney movie "You think I'm an ignorant savage..."

This was a very interesting video. I think there is a refreshing change of view in these Native peoples responses. However some of this should be looked at with a grain of salt. For example the why would we go to the moon is really a question that would hold back much of human progress. I mean seeking to explore the world around us is a driving force for development. Not to say that their caution is not wise just that it can be taken too far.

I actually found the conversation about the moon FASCINATING! Firstly, because of the odd lack of curiosity. Why WOULDNT you want to know whats on the moon, but also the belief system, not so much a religion but certainly a spiritual belief that creates a barrier to new exploration or questioning what we know about our world now.

Something thats true in most cultures

Technology is what has given mankind the ability to create the civilization we have today, with all its pros and cons. As we become more connected through this technology to the rest of civilization we become more detached from our heritage, our roots, and the spiritual aspect of life. Which I think is a large part of why many of us are here. Religion in itself has offered no, or unsatisfactory, answers and we look to fill the spiritual gap in our lives.

Form the Barber’s Speech, “We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.” With the technology we have developed we have lost our spiritual connection to the world around us. We no longer feel the Earth. We cut down and destroy what we find unpleasant and replace it with something that suits our desires. Cell phones growing out of our hands have replaced the close bond we had with our families and neighbors and replaced that with instant gratification and streaming opinions of those who only look to promote their own desires.

But, do not get me wrong… Our technology has also created aspects of life that are far more comfortable. Far more convenient. And improved and lengthened the quality of life for everyone. Without our curiosity we would have far less knowledge, understanding of things we knew nothing of before and far fewer abilities.

Science and techology, and spirituality should not be in conflict with each other. But for so many they are… they should complement each other. Science should answer the questions of nature and the universe and spirituality should keep us connected and give us an understanding of what to do with this knowledge.

My daughter calls me “The Tree Hugger.” But I tell people I try to live with the Earth, not just on it. We often look to achieve balance in our lives, but so often we reject anything that may limit our dependency on technology. Balance must be achieved in all things; all aspects of life.

Just my initial thoughts on it all.

that was awesome

they all knew who michael jackson was lol
the song was called SCREAM

first verse:

"Tired of injustice
Tired of the schemes
The lies are disgusting
So what does it mean
Kicking me down
I got to get up
As jacked as it sounds
The whole system sucks"

after that there was a piece from the song "they dont care about us" which was about america's treatment of minorities

interesting choices lol

i got the impression that many of them already had opinions about "our world," but it was interesting to watch the exchange

i wish i could see the whole video but im not finding it

i enjoyed their perspective on plants

it was interesting to see the traditionalism in the dialogue. by that i mean particularly the tendency to cling to tradition and be dubious towards things which are different

but they have good reasons to be dubious

i also enjoyed the young warriors reaction to the opera (i think?) singer: "this music is not our culture; we can only watch and listen but she is moving us"

to me it was a great eexample into the universality of humanity: i saw people who have different ways of dressing and different ideas about reality because of the history of their culture, but who are much like myself underneath that

thank you for sharing this video Brenna, and if anyone can find the entire segment i would love to see it

I thought of you when I was watching it Wes ;) You ol hippy you :D

OB1Shinobi, I literally laughed out loud when a whole bunch of them raised their hands to say they knew Michael Jackson!

And yes, That was Opera, Maria Callas from her one of her final tours if youre at all interested. Her voice had already vastly deteriorated by then which I always find hard to watch.

It's a great exercise to imagine the medium of our culture dissolving away and being replaced by other types!! I gotta disagree with the video's use of "white people" though, it is more accurately how "rich people" fight.

What is also interesting to consider is that it could all go backwards again if humanity doesn't get smarter as technology increases - and part of that is spirituality IMO.
