Like I said, just an idea. That's the kind of info you don't realize you need until it happens.

There was a rabid cat that attacked one of ours on our property today and a few phone calls revealed that we have no Animal Control in our county. What are people supposed to do? Not all of us have guns or could bring ourselves to shoot another creature.

Not silly at all. This is the type of thing I want people requesting.

its not silly
i understand not having a gun, but if you wont kill a rabid animal then the price you pay for that weakness is that it will infect you or those close to you
rabies spreads via saliva, so anything or anyone that your cat has licked is likely infected, if it has
good chance you already know this, my apologies if i am not telling you something new, but i feel obligated to say that rabies spreads via saliva, so your cat that was attacked is likely infected, and any other mammals that your cat has licked may be infected
if it hasnt already been done, then afaik, the cat that was attacked and the cat that did the attacking both need to be captured and quarantined - neither can be allowed to run free - and if you know for sure that the attacking cat is rabid then it needs to be killed
People are complicated.

With respect, lets not hijack this thread. This thread is for suggestions for Madhatter's project.

EDIT
i should have said squeamishness instead of weakness - my apologies, that was an insensitive choice of words

RUN AWAY. FAR AWAY. Do not go near it, do not try to make it better, do not sic your dog on it, don't call your crazy uncle Bubba Jay who eats rabid animals. Treat it as if it has plague. Stay away and stay safe.
I am an Animal Control Deputy. Please please please......stay away from it.
Don't post videos of how to trap it etc. Just don't.
Snowy, many smaller municipalities do not have Animal Control people. In that case go up the chain of command. Call your local PD. If they cannot offer assistance, call your County. If County cannot help call State.
If none of those are viable options to get you phone numbers. Call your local DNR office. Local Office, Regional Office, State Office.
There are exterminators available as well. One of those above should be able to help direct you to get assistance.
Here is the information posted on the CDC website about Rabies.

I'm not trying to derail this conversation, just be safe. I hope this helps answer some questions.
