The third eye is an area of focus that aids the user in spiritual enlightenment, of sorts. Depending on belief system and usage it could encompass a focal point for drawing power, looking into the spiritual realm and even scrying.
During certain meditation practices, it is the focal point of the eyes as the initiator allows the cleansing light of the universe to encompass their body. From there, it is believed that the out of body experience can be initiated.
To know more, you need to ask what it is you’re looking to learn.

What Wescli said. It's considered a dan tien, a chakra, a tanden occasionally, a divine eye, and any of a number of other occult, arcane, or spiritual terms that each have very specific meanings in their own practices.
If you're unsure where to begin learning about them, we can start a dialog about them in general, but if you're looking for specific information, we'll need a bit more to work with, since we all come from different backgrounds.

The reason I am asking is because I believe my third eye is attempting to open, but I believe I am still not in control of my mind/consciousness enough to help the process. I believe this to be true after reading this article http://www.higherperspectives.com/third-eye-open-1557123242.html, but I am really looking for help in learning how to help the process, and rather than delve into the informational abyss that is the internet, I was hoping someone who already has knowledge could point me in the way of information about opening of the third eye.

I looked at the article. What causes you to think that your third eye is opening? And are you actively trying to be aware of this?

it's also known as the 6th chakra, which is my strongest one....the intuitive perception it provides is highly useful....i don't remember when my intuition skyrocketed as it has been so very long. i do however remember the most common circumstances i endured...for me it was long periods of quiet isolation, interspersed with periods that demanded a heightened awareness (i was abused at home as a child and bullied frequently at school, bus stop, playground, etc). i think, for me, it developed out of necessity, a means of self preservation.
if you're trying to develop it, i'd recommend spending some alone/quiet time out in nature away from technology and people....sit, with your eyes closed expand your senses to feel the air move, hear the distant rustling of animals...try to hear the insects moving about, try to feel the change in air movement as the leaves move, try to hear the movement of the universe...i know it sounds "odd", but the further you expand your senses and open yourself up the more you connect to the higher awareness...

Warning: Spoiler!
There is passion, yet there is peace
Through passion I gain strength and knowledge
Through strength and knowledge I gain victory
Through victory I gain peace and harmony
Through peace and harmony my chains are broken
There is no death, there is the force and it shall free me

The third eye, or the eye of Shiva as it is called in the Vedas, is the eye of knowledge the power to see the world as a dream of some-one else. You must have read about violent enlightenment, that is what happens in it. Some people do call it a chakra, but it is more about a perception about the world, rather than an active body-center.
I have had an experience earlier, and it is really, really nasty. If you want to try, try this. Wait for something bad to happen in your life. For example's sake let's assume you broke up with someone. Now start analysing why you feel bad. Focus on that aspect. It is possible your mind retaliates with something on the lines of " I'm worthless" Good, then feel worthless. Till you reach an emotional height that is unbearable. When you reach this saturation point, look back at what felt it. Try to contemplate that indeed 'you' as a person are trapped in this body, you think, and this is happening. What is trapped? Go deeper.
Try identifying yourself, catagorising yourself. Discard items that feel illogical or you truly do not believe in. You will reach a point of saturation where you feel like you are literally nothing. Your mind shall rebel. You will cry, you will feel dead, that indeed what you are is just an amalgamation of events none of which are special. Things get terrifying. My dad gave me sleeping pills when I was in that state of mind. I visited hypnotherapists to get out of my mind... Now I learnt that I should have accepted it then. I haven't had that feeling lately, but I'm certain the day it comes back I'll let it absorb me.
