Sam Harris wrote an interesting essay on the topic, aptly titled 'Lying', I found it a good introduction to the subject.

I'll sure read it. But how is that different from Radical Honesty, by Brad Blanton?

I gave it a try for a while, and I was able to be without a lie for almost a year. It was troublesome, even if it did bring some peace of heart, but the trials were just too much for me to handle.

If covering means enabling him to feel more free from his responsibilities (which is often of potential) I would refrain in the intention and approach of only that it should reinforce his tendency to adhere to them.
