And that is why I'd go ronin given the opportunity...emerge after the chaos has settled to see if I should rejoin the world or continue to go it alone...

How did I know that this was going to come up?
Because, given a life-or-death decision, most people are either too panicked or too ignorant to choose the path that leads to their continued existence on their own. Sometimes it means looking at the big picture, and sometimes it means being selfish, and people in general have a hard time knowing when to be which.
Sure, it's great that you want to help that group over there because they came over with their hands out. Except, every morsel of food you give them is one you aren't eating. If they aren't willing to actively contribute to your survival, and you share your food with them, you're both just going to starve a little slower.
It seems harsh. Some would even call it "evil." But them's the breaks, folks. Harsh times necessitate swift, decisive action and harsh penalties.
Might work during the initial fall out and panic, but in the long run I can think of no better way to create rebellion and malcontents.
And that is why I'd go ronin given the opportunity...emerge after the chaos has settled to see if I should rejoin the world or continue to go it alone...
Warning: Spoiler!
There is passion, yet there is peace
Through passion I gain strength and knowledge
Through strength and knowledge I gain victory
Through victory I gain peace and harmony
Through peace and harmony my chains are broken
There is no death, there is the force and it shall free me

If you feel like reading a bunch of other people's ideas- here's another thread pretty much on the same topic!

When the world is stable again, we'll worry about rebellion and malcontents.

“Though, as the crusade presses on, I find myself altogether incapable of staying here in saftey while others shed their blood for such a noble and just cause. For surely must the Almighty be with us even in the sundering of our nation. Our fight is for freedom, for liberty, and for all the principles upon which that aforementioned nation was built.” - Patrick “Madman of Galway” O'Dell

A very interesting scenario...
The only honest answer I can think of is this: I have no effing idea how i would lead them. Probably try to set up some kind of democratic means of deciding who is assigned which "job" necessary for the survival of the group. My first task would be to get to know the people "under my command" to see what skills we each have. Knowing the skillset available would be necessary to the group's survival in a post-apocalyptic world.
