I'm not sure it's so much about controlling emotions as much as it's recognizing and accepting them for what they are, and not allowing them to control our actions.

Emotion, yet peace

If we are to know what peace is, and to experience it for what it is, emotion is necessary to have. It is not about avoiding it, but about accepting it. With accepting it, we recognize it for what it is and why it is, and so we are able to channel it without trying to grind against it (thereby creating more and excessive emotion toward it). It is through accepting emotion in this way that we are able to bring ourselves to peace.

Apply this to the creed, the maxims and teachings, and you'll see how it fits together. :)

I can see what you're saying, in a generalised sense, but thinking of an acute situation, the guy you've been trying to help for the past 20 mins as he becomes increasingly abusive. Anger. Desire to punch said individual.

Surly in this situation emotional control is vital (as well as impulse control, of course!)

I like the "Emotion, yet peace" line of the Code but I also think the "Passion, yet serenity" line applies to the issue of anger.

See, to me those seem opposites; Emotion and peace, Passion and Serenity... ?

Interesting . . . can you expand on that a little. To me, they seem more like one another. But that is just my perspective.

It's about finding that balance, acknowledging that both exist in our lives. Emotion and Peace, Passion and Serenity. They do sound a bit similar,...

Yeah, I can relate. It's natural. And of course its about emotional control. Emotional control, though, comes through letting yourself feel it, and knowing its okay to feel it, so long as you don't let it take the wheel.

I think the problem is not the anger. You can simply look at anger as a great amount of energy needed in that situation you are in. Not for starting a physical fight. The problem is with the negative energy that usually comes with it and the thought that you must punch something or hurt someone (either physically or emotionally). And I think these things are learned. So the anger with neutral energy or just energy (call it as you like it) can stay, you just have to unlearn the learned negativity. I can be wrong of course :)
