I remember feeling that way coming out of the Navy...
I don't know how helpful my dream would be to you, but I love writing. I write fantasy with an element of science fiction. I have loved telling stories since I was a kid, but never even considered making a career of it until my college English instructor told me I should consider publishing some of my work.
My advice would be to just think of what you really love to do and find a way to make a career of it!

“Though, as the crusade presses on, I find myself altogether incapable of staying here in saftey while others shed their blood for such a noble and just cause. For surely must the Almighty be with us even in the sundering of our nation. Our fight is for freedom, for liberty, and for all the principles upon which that aforementioned nation was built.” - Patrick “Madman of Galway” O'Dell

Well, my ultimate dream job would be lead singer in a punk rock band. Since that doesn't seem likely, I'll stick to obtainable goals. My current goal is to finish my associate's degree in Information Systems and start working in the industry as an IT professional. After/during that time I want to continue working on my fiction writing and hopefully sell a few books.
After marrying Sammi, starting a family, and settling down some, I would then love to continue my education and pursue a bachelor's degree in Linguistics or a related field. After that my dream is to work as an author full time.
Cheers to all of your dreams everyone! Even if things don't work out exactly like we plan, they always end up working out somehow!
Avalon, as Naya said, examine your thoughts, feelings, and yearnings. Take time to meditate on the problem. Still, don't forget to take part in some distractions too! Being too obsessed with these sorts of things can actually be detrimental.
Best of luck to ya!
In Earnest,
Lykeios

That's kind of what I'm hoping to do, but I'm wanting to be careful, too. I don't want to take something I love now and turn it into a "I have to do this in order to get by" later on.
I'm certainly being quite prayerful about it, which I'm guessing could be the same thing as what you're saying now. As for breaks, I know I have a year left before I absolutely have to decide, but a year goes by so quickly. But that's still good advice, thank you.

If I could do ANYTHING, it would be getting paid to read books by the beach, on a meadow, or in the forests and mountains (dreaming, right?).
That being said, I like my current job a lot (as it allows me breaks to come post here at the Temple, haha).
I work in I.T. Middleware and I find it enjoyable.

When I was little we had to draw and write about what we wanted to be when we grew up. I wrote that I wanted to live in a cabin by the sea with my dog and paint and write.
As I grew up I wanted to be everything from a formula 1 driver to an opera singer to a journalist. And Ive been lucky enough to give most of the things that interested me a go(marine biologist and race car driver aside)
Discovering what I really wanted to do with life happened accidently. I didnt know that I was interested in it, I didnt know that I would have any kind of ability to do it, but when I realised that I felt vibrant and driven and focused every time I found myself doing it, that is when I understood the expression, follow your bliss.
Bliss it seems is not being able to spend every day sleeping late, eating chocolate and not having to go to work, its the feeling of being so drawn to something that time seems to disappear when you do it, and it leaves you feeling invigorated. Its something that rests on your values and nourishes you through doing it.
The unfortunate thing? No one can tell you what that is and you cant guess, you have to explore and follow your instinct until you find that thing that makes your whole self hum.
That is what I do when Im not working, and hopefully what I will eventually do for work. Make myself hum

When I was younger I would have answered musician but now I would say a writer. The freedom to go to a cabin in nature and write ten pages a day for a three month period. To further my book rent a beach house for a week and write to an ocean. To better understand my characters fly to Paris to deepen their relationships. To capture the setting take the train from Paris to Venice to be awed inspired.
Deliver my book on time and pray others will embrace it!
Than start all over again.
Yeah. definitely writer.
