Fascinating stuff! Aside from the link provided at the bottom of the article, are there any other websites that support this theory? It seems plausible, and is something I have considered from time to time in my studies of the bible.

If there are any other sources to support this position, I would love to read further and will do some research myself before I come to my own conclusion :)

I'm interested, sure.

But I'm always sketchy about people who I have to buy tickets for their "grand truth". So he smells conspiracy to me. Not to mention some of the info don't make much sense but maybe I don't know much lol.

I don't know about the absolute value in debunking Jesus any more than the entire pantheon of other deities down through the generations.

On the other hand, the influence of elaborate stories was explored in "Storytelling" a few years ago by Christian Salmon (- yes, that is the author's name ; I'm not talking about religious fish).

This is certainly fascinating! However, it isn't a new theory at all. At least, the idea that Jesus may not have ever been a real person at all is not new. I watched s documentary over a year ago called "Selling God." If you haven't seen it you all should. The filmographer is entertaining and enlightening. Mind you, I haven't done extensive fact checking on his points, but it all sounds accurate. I'm no Bible scholar, but I've read much of the book and the inconsistencies match what the man is saying.

I too am wary of the "buy tickets to my event I'm going to disprove religion" sort of stuff. Still, it could just be that this gentleman is a capitalist. ;)

“Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man.” -Zhuangzi

“Though, as the crusade presses on, I find myself altogether incapable of staying here in saftey while others shed their blood for such a noble and just cause. For surely must the Almighty be with us even in the sundering of our nation. Our fight is for freedom, for liberty, and for all the principles upon which that aforementioned nation was built.” - Patrick “Madman of Galway” O'Dell

Shh. Don't ruin Christmas for me. ;)

hahahah. But, in all seriousness, I think that Jesus, whether he was 'real' or not, has great and good influence on some.

But at what expense? If it was indeed a weapon, it is the most powerful and destructive ever invented.

There's strong suggestions as well that the book that best documents celtic religious practices (written by julius cesar) and specifically druids was a fabricated propaganda tool... So that the romans would believe that the celts/druids are worthy of rome's attention but that they need to be invaded too, to be civilized and at peace, etc.
Basically just like the news today. Actually rome used to be a democracy :S

We're sooo f*cked.

Even without referring to the author’s pitch in detail it is clear that his conspiracy theory is untenable. But in the end, it does not matter if the Jesus story is composed by government operatives for nefarious reasons or the work of faithful disciples. Myth is the narrative embodiment of an idea, and so the mythic Jesus is as true as that of the mythic Buddha or the mythic Dionysus. The respective narratives regarding these ‘gods’ each truthfully embody an idea; an idea that expresses a truth. Their truth is not based upon history or fact. Juxtaposing myth and fact is comparing apples and oranges; it is an invalid because the comparison is across different categories.
