ive been thinking about it lately, and it just sorta seems to elude me.

so, my alternative theory for the existence of intelligence is, that theres just critical thinking, no intelligence.

what do you think?

In my opinion, intelligence is the level of innate skill and proficiency within one's own culture.

So for example, in Western cultures, intelligence is probably signified through educational degrees, speaking abilities, wealth, artistic/performing talent, etc.

At the same time, in a tribal culture, intelligence is probably signified through hunting skills, survival skills, knowledge of rituals, etc.

In response to the original post's question,
I think that Critical Thinking is a type of intelligence recognized mostly in democratic or western cultures. In other, more oppressive societies, critical thinking incites dissent and is often discouraged. After all, why do you think every rising dictatorship starts with killing off all the intellectuals?

in·tel·li·gence [in-tel-i-juhns] A
noun
1.
capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding, and similar forms of mental activity; aptitude in grasping truths, relationships, facts, meanings, etc.

Hrm...I'd say critical thinking is just one piece of intelligence, based on the definition above.

I think it can be sharp or blunt, but the attribute could be critical interpretation. The general idea is to able to understand information in such a way to allow contextual transformation of it (without destroying it) for deductive reasoning perhaps.

Where would critical thinking come in terms of art and creativity?

well, for me at least it means an ability to admit i dont like my music, so id move on and try something else which im highly likely to like better in my current mood.

generally, to stop me from being like beethoven, and move on instead. ive noticed my music will seem very beethovenic if i dont critically think of my music, that i just run on same spot.

I just took a course on human development. We now know a lot more since the MRI came along. There are "domains" of human development. A couple of them are cognitive. What we define as intelligence is the higher level cognitive domain functions like critical thinking, synthesis, analysis, etc. There is no way to measure it. Nearly all humans are capable of it.

So basically, yes intelligence is an attribute. It's not like in D&D attributes because any person can have an 18 score intelligence or 140 IQ if they learn to use their brain.

Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.
