I doubt I could finish it before I died, there have been only two others in history to have completed it. Assuming somehow I did, I guess I'd spend the rest of my years teaching and enjoying life.

Well the castle is just an analogy, but yes pretty much there would be nothing left to do after it's completion except just enjoy the time remaining.

It's my purpose for living.

I could be wrong, but it seems like the more this thread progresses the more it reflects what I posted on page 2.

Proteus wrote: Maynoth, there are two options you have, and no matter who, or how many people here, give a certain answer, its not going to make either one more right than the other. In short, nobody here has the actual answer but you.

Neither choice is wrong. It is not a right or wrong scenario. It is a "decide how you want to write your story from here and take away from the results all that either one has to give."

This is life - for all of us. :)

Also, regardless of what choice you make, its going to be tough. When it gets tough, remember something important. *points to my sig below*

Hamlet Act 1, scene 3, 78–82
"To thine own self be true" is Polonius's last piece of advice to his son Laertes, who is in a hurry to get on the next boat to Paris, where he'll be safe from his father's long-winded speeches [see NEITHER A BORROWER NOR A LENDER BE].

"Polonius has in mind something much more Elizabethan than the New Age self-knowledge that the phrase now suggests. As Polonius sees it, borrowing money, loaning money, carousing with women of dubious character, and other intemperate pursuits are "false" to the self. By "false" Polonius seems to mean "disadvantageous" or "detrimental to your image"; by "true" he means "loyal to your own best interests." Take care of yourself first, he counsels, and that way you'll be in a position to take care of others. There is wisdom in the old man's warnings, of course; but he repeats orthodox platitudes with unwonted self-satisfaction. Polonius, who is deeply impressed with his wordliness, has perfected the arts of protecting his interests and of projecting seeming virtues, his method of being "true" to others. Never mind that this includes spying on Hamlet for King Claudius. Never mind, as well, that many of Polonius's haughty, if not trite, kernels of wisdom are now taken as Shakespeare's own wise pronouncements on living a proper life."

You're hanging on to this too tight. Make a choice and enjoy the journey.

Be happy, live well.

I think, Maynoth, that ultimately, the only important question here is:

What matters more to you, your body and this physical "reality" or your spirit, the true you which is eternal?

If you don't mind me saying: It seems to me that if this is mysterious 'castle' is your "purpose for living", then you would not be able to appreciate living life unless you at least made a concentrated attempt towards that goal. You can live life with money, but even if you were able to muster the interest in a field that provided money it seems that unless you were able to continue down the path your passion lies upon your life would be devoid of honest joy.

I think you know deep down the choice you need to make. The best choice is always to follow what you love first and let everything else fall in stride behind that. Life works out if you let it and I've found that if you do what you love you usually end up opening more doors than you may have expected (as long as you remain open minded).

Best of luck. :)

However I am trying to answer a question.

Do you pick a life of wealth, and give up what gives your life meaning in return.

Or do you live in poverty, and focus on what gives you meaning.

I have 2 things to say here and then I think I'm going to bow out of this thread, too. (go the way of Rickie and Des)

1) Maynoth, you really need to learn the difference between disagreeing with you, or simply voicing an opinion that is just as valid as yours, but maybe not the same as yours...and trolling you.

2) If your purpose on this thread is simply to answer that question, then why bother with the thread? It's not like any of us can answer a question about what's best for you, for you...
