How did Mormonism grow from Methodism?

That chart is a load of rubbish. One of the many errors is the assumption that the listed religions are monolithic in the sense that they remain constant throughout their history and across geography. Not so. Judaism is itself influenced by a variety of sources and has never been monolithic.

The chart is so wrong in so many ways. The lines between religions is supposedly showing development (influence?) from one to another. So, what was Christianity before Paul if he is its first interpreter? But he was of the Pharisaic tradition so that line has to be re-drawn. Judean Christianity is a misnomer. The earliest competing tradition was Galilean or does the chart mean Jerusalem? Then that would have to be part of 1st century Judaism before the destruction of the Second Temple. After that everything changed.

Cathars? Why does this heresy get a place?

Sadducees? They ARE the Northern Tribal which is a meaningless term anyway.

the way i understood it is that joseph smit was a methodist before he had his vision and found the ancient writings which he used to become the "new moses" and write the book of mormon

It's been some many many MANY Long ages since I studied the religion of my birth (Realtives go back in mormonism since the beginning) But as I recall.... Joseph Smith wasn't any one religion, he jumped into many of them and found them all to be un-truthful. Which is what got him seeking and studying the path to god and eventually running into the woods to pray because of all the sinful relgions around him.

I could be mistaken though.

Well it is a given fact that The LDS Never taught the truth of a great many things XD lol After all, Joseph Smith wasn't exactly the Saint they make him out to be  But in the case of it's foundation I don't think the Charts Tree is accurate either.

Ob1Shinobi is correct: Joseph Smith joined the Methodist faith before he founded Mormonism.

ETA: But, as someone else pointed out with the other faiths on that list, Mormonism didn't take root from Methodism or in other words, its founding wasn't directly related to a schism with Methodism. Mormonism was a form of Restoration Christianity.

And as Kitsu Tails related to the full history of Mormonism not being fully in the open, there are many Mormons that don't know that Joseph Smith joined the Methodist faith AFTER he had his grand first vision where he claims God told him all other religions were wrong.

Go figure...
