So, my theology teacher is very possibly doing a unit on Jediism. I offered to help plan it, but I need help. How would you best suggest teaching someone The basic understandings and teachings within roughly a week's time?

May the Force be with you, in this life and the next.

Print the pertinent beliefs out and hand it to them or direct them to the website. Make sure to express your personal interest so he knows what you have to say is bias.

You have to have their interest...

You can talk to you are blue in the face, but if noone is listening, then what are you teaching? Answer: nothing, ...

However, if you captivate them, make it interesting, it will hold their interest...

Once most people learn that we are not into lightsabers, or force powers, they seem to lose interest quick...

Reading and thining is not very exciting...

As others have suggested, I would say print out the code and the creed and the what 'Jedi Believe'. Make mention that people can combine the ideals of Jediism with their other beliefs etc

Possibly mention that we have an active teaching programme that takes 'realistically' over a year to complete and we have a clerical training programme and additional further training after Knighthood etc...

We are lead by a group of leaders and not just blindly following the wishes of a single charismatic leader etc...

If they challenge you by saying "It isn't a 'real' religion." well get them to define what is and isn't a religion, then get them to justify who has the authority to decide it ;)

Off the top of my head I would bring those up :)

As well as mentioning what other have already (not fiction-heavy in terms of teaching etc...)

Well, there's what ToTJO believes, and then there is how others go about living the Jedi Path. What needs to happen first and foremost, is that if you present it as ToTJO's version of Jediism, they need to know that there are other systems out there which teach similar systems, but are not necessarily the same system. I would also go on the record and explain that as a rule, Jediism is not the only way to practice the Jedi Path- there is an entire philosophy which looks at the path as something spiritual, but not religious in nature, known as "Jedi Realism".

Furthermore, I would request that it be made known that the Jedi Path predates the 2001 census. We go back as far as 1996, with a small website called Kharis Nyteflyer's Praxeum. (the 2001 census is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, lol)

Actually we (jedi) predate 1996 as well...the praxeum was merely the first widescale attempt to bring jedi together, there are those of us that followed the path long before then...we were simply scattered...

@jestor, wait what? We're not into lightsabers?...I must of missed the memo :woohoo:

Ally, RyuJin's right.

The online COMMUNITY began in '96.

To the OP: I would also suggest, if you are going to give a unit on "jediism" (a.k.a. the religious side of the Jedi movement), you should include the Christian Order of Jedi Knights http://www.freewebs.com/christianorderofjediknights/ and Adam's (Xhaiden's) older stuff: the Jediism Way (you can currently find him at barando.org).
