What is enlightenment?

Enlightenment is freedom within a cage.

So true The thing is, if you have to ask what enlightenment is, you'll never experience it.

There was a story I read years ago (I can't remember the source), but I believe it went something like this:

The monks in a temple heard that one of their fellow monks had attained enlightenment. They rushed to him and asked, "How do you feel?"
His reply was, "As miserable as ever."

Very interesting posts. To me enlightenment has always been waking up to your true self. As vague as this sounds it has meaning to me.

I read once that describing enlightenment is like discribing music to someone using only words. Impossible to do.

In the end, I suppose enlightenment is something that needs to be experienced individually.

as was pointed out it's something that really can't be explained or described, but experienced...and each persons experience is different
