What do you do for a living?

I was out of town last weekend and while walking alone on a forest road (which was quite beautiful I might add) an older man came up to me and started a conversation.

The subject came up about what I do for a living. I said that I worked in a cube, behind a computer, for a technology company.

Surprisingly, the man sneered at me and said "You'd never get me behind a computer! They tried to get me to learn a computer, I told them they were wasting their f****** time! I want to be out in the sunshine or in the rain. You don't see the rain in your cube. I get to be out in nature while you're at a desk."

I suppose he was quite rude, but I wasn't offended. He made me think about my career a little bit. I told him it's part of the reason I like to ride my bike to work (to feel the sun on my face, or the wind, or when it happens, the rain.). (He seemed to calm down when I told him I used to construct/finish antique furniture replicas. Odd....)

So without further adieu...

I work behind a computer all day.
I'm a Systems Analyst for a technology company.
And I'm an alcoholic.

(Just kidding about the alcoholic part.)

Anyway.

What do the Jedi here at this Temple do for a living? And if you don't work for a living, are you in school? What takes the largest part of your time during the day?

MTFBWY All,
LTK

I'm a senior undergraduate at college.

I study Geographic Information Systems (Analytical Cartography), Classics (Ancient Mediterranean History) and Anthropology, with minors in History and Latin.

I work behind a computer for about half the day.

Most of my day I am reading stuff on the computer or fussing with books, or eating, or [strike]wasting time[/strike] relaxing :)

I'm just a High School Senior, so I appear to be one of the youngest ones to reply to this post! B)
By the way, I go to a difficult private school and maintain a 3.9 GPA, so I think I'm a hard worker ;)

I actually found your situation with the old man interesting to discuss, Learn to Know.

He seemed to get really fired up and offensive with you when you told him about a job he utterly hates. I personally don't think he meant any harm. True, he was rude. But not intentionally. He just got strongly emotional when you mentioned your job - the idea of being trapped behind a computer filled that old man's mind and made him yell at you in horror :woohoo:

My point being that, in general, all of us snap at someone due to a subject, and not due to the person. You follow?

I'm also a high school senior, but I also work as a radio producer at a country music station. It sounds cool, but it's not a job I really enjoy (I don't enjoy the music either!). It mainly consists of being alone in a studio flipping switches and turning knobs, coordinating broadcasts and answering to the broadcasters. It can be stressful at times, as when something goes wrong it falls on me. What I'd change about it is that I don't get much people time, and that it's the most difficult part of the radio-broadcast process, yet I get the lowest paycheck. :P I won't be keeping this job for much longer, though, because I'll be leaving after finishing high school.

The job in which I'm currently engaged is that of reception agent, administrative adjunct in the cultural service of the city of Dijon. I work at conservatory. It is a fulfilling job, for I get to meet a lot of creative and artistic people of all ages, and have been widely regarded as their 'resident philosopher'. It is hard to say precisely what my job entails, as I get to do a lot of different and interesting things. Today, I get to go back to work after a six-week holiday. I'm looking forward to it ...

Be a philosopher ; but, amidst all your philosophy, be still a man.
~ David Hume

Chaque homme a des devoirs envers l'homme en tant qu'homme.

I too am a high school senior.

Nah, jk, for my jobby job, I work at the local mental health association as the data technician (read:computer guy) and certified peer support specialist. Kinda like a low rent therapist, but better than a shrink IMO because the advice I give is from someone who's been there and understands the realities of a persons situation. Its rewarding, just not financially.

So with that I am involved in several orgs: NAMI, WINGS Alabama, DBSA, the serenity group (local consumer org I head) and I'm prob forgetting one or two.

I also formed a small consulting firm (never had more than 3 people in it) initially with the aim of getting into the lucrative defense contrsacting industry (where I used to work) and still nay. Tho for the past year or two, I have used it mostly to lobby politicians for changes to laws that would benefit: animal rights, tax reform, drug laws and sentencing, immigration, state and federal budgeting, welfare and more. Whatever strikes my fancy, really. I like this because I have a low attention span, and getting to work on different projects helps with that. Right now, this is not very financially rewarding either, but has numerous upsides with being your own boss and all that. But I'm hoping that, as I build a body of work in the field, I can land higher paying contracts than non profits and charity cases!

I build railways. I'm acknowledged as the 'smart one' so I often get requested to aid the engineers or act in a safety role as I do the job better than the trained professionals. I'm 21 and have a well-paid, full-time job. I only do it for the money, which I intend on saving so I can gain an education and a marketable skill.
