When I am reading or doing any kind of work at or near the computer, there is a youtube playlist I enjoy putting on. The artist is "Stars of the Lid" if you've never heard of it, and it is very relaxing background music, keeping me focused and clear headed throughout the time I am working.

I hope this helps any of you who could use this to aid in your studies.

My avatar? I threw it together myself actually. It's made from a design of an Astrolabe compass, and a Jedi symbol laid over it to combine my love for astronomy and the Jedi way of living. :)

Back on topic: Again, I highly recommend Stars of the Lid to anybody who Meditates, reads books and other material often, or just simply would like or need some relaxing atmospheric background sound while they work or lounge. None of the tracks have words or lyrics and I think that is important as that keeps any risk of distraction down to a minimum, yet you can still notice it setting a great mood for you.

Does anybody else have any ambient music they recommend?

Not so much for studying but I highly recommend psybient music for listening to at other times. It is written and designed to take you on a journey and is a mixture of psychedelic chill-out, ambient, world music, new age and dub. I download psybient mixes from House-mixes.com and particularly recommend a series of mixes called Liquid Floating by a DJ named Floydotwo.

Here's a video, not so much for the imagery but for the sounds. The creator indicates that isochronic tones are used... which from Wikipedia is;

"Isochronic tones are regular beats of a single tone used for brainwave entrainment. Similar to monaural beats, the interference pattern that produces the beat is outside the brain so headphones are not required for entrainment to be effective."

and

"Isochronic tones work by emitting sound at regular intervals. This excites the thalamus and causes the brain to duplicate the frequency of the Isochronic tones, changing its thought patterns."

Thank you Adder :)

I like these recommendations a lot so far, so I've added them to my youtube playlist.

Another really good selection is Liquid Mind. It's a lot more fluid and without actual beats, but its wonderful for meditation and sleep as well. Take a listen and see what you think. :)
