So Im a Jedi and I have a goal of starting a chapter here in NYC. I found some studioes where people rent it for an hour or to and they dance or place music and do martial arts , yoga etc. So I have an idea of teaching the Jedi way live like if it was a christian church but with out the music lol and also I will include martial arts, yoga, meditation and use a lot of the material made available by TOTJO. I was thinking of charging for the martial arts traing so that I don have to ask for donations and always have funds for any material and give the Jedi teaching for free. It not a perfect project but I'm still thinking it through. If you guys have any ideas let me know.

Not knowing your outside credentials, you are not yet through our training....

It is required to be able to teach, using TOTJO as a reference....

I too have thought about it in my local area, (Illinois), I am already a TKD instructor and completed my training here at the Temple...

But, ya gotta have a plan, sounds good as a starting point...

On walk-about...

Jedi ain't Saints....

I agree with Jestor. To use TOTJO as a reference you would have to have completed the training yourself (no reason why wouldn't want to do that regardless though :))

As a personal preference I would always prefer to ask for donations. Not because I like guilt tripping people into giving me money :P but because it allows for as wide an audience as is possible. If someone who isn't well off can't pay one week it doesn't matter all too much.

I'm glad you made the distinction between martial arts having a fee and the Jedi training itself not having one.

The Jedi training definitely shouldn't, but if you are having a charge I think it should be as low as possible. My Ninjitsu lessons for example are £5 for 2 hours which is incredibly good value!

Good luck with whatever you decide to pursue.

I understand jestor and akkarin and I thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. I will think about what you said but if I may speak freely. The plan was or is to teach what I know and truly understanding. I'm still learning many things with the order. As for the chapter what Im thinking about teaching are lessons that i have always shown at the dojos and besides martial arts I teach independence, empowerment, meditation, law, body laungue, public speaking, leadership skills, team work, positive thinking, self improvement, verbal judo, self control an so forth. I was thinking of renting out this spot twice a week for two hours each get together.I was also just thinking of teaching and using the orders preyers, rules and creed. As my idea becomes more clear I shall post more so that you all can guide me better. Thank you brothers.

Mars, you have grand ideas and those ideas are seeds of what the Force is guiding you to do. Be encouraged and continue to dream until it is real. Think of the Temple as the incubator for these ideas. Learn, train, read, do, teach. These things will be cultivated in your heart. Go through the initiate program where you can manifest the next steps in your journey.

I like your enthusiasm.

This thread is now over 6 months old. I'd be curious to know if this was ever set up or not

Thank you all for your advice and comments. I just came back to the site. I have been perfecting my skills as a teacher and speacker..I made a group on meetup.com for jedis but it has been hard. Doing something on your own always is.

Having helped run a pagan group out of Okinawa (don't really know how that ended up happening...I was trying NOT to do that, lol) and currently running a Jedi Chapter in the area (I have to drive about an hour north to go to a State Park, we do our training outdoors...currently looking for something that is enclosed for the winter :/), let me give you some advice.

Until you are through the training here at ToTJO, start making a list of topics and the like you want to cover. It doesn't matter the order of which you write them, just get them down on paper. As your training continues, add on things that are required by ToTJO to teach and anything that you can think of your group would benefit from.

Watch how your instructor(s) teach. Take notes on their style and write down what you like about them so you can incorporate that into your own style.

Talk to people that CURRENTLY run offline groups (I'll say it now, since we just started, I'm probably not the best one for this particular subject) and ask them what you can do to help keep members interested in being a part of the group. Gabriel Calderon, of Chicago Jedi, is probably your best bet. He's the one I'm talking to. :D

And finally, find someone that is willing to help you in your area. It would be best, if you could find someone that is already trained as a Jedi to be your peer. The guy I'm working with has run a Jedi Chapter in the past, but because of the location he pulled the most support from was a college town, it didn't last as long as he had hoped (people come in and they leave, you know). Don't go in on it alone, you'll need to have someone to help keep you in check-even I do. ;)
