Is God the work of ignorant man? Or, simply unexplainable? was created by Eleven
I have been a Christian most of my life and I sit on a pew every thursday and sunday...for some that hear this it's frowned upon because I am a member of totjo and Jedi Knight. For others, it matters not. I am not sure why I decided to express that but, moving on...
I was sitting in Church last night with my wife and it was a good service. The evangelist made a point that, "God does get tired or sleep." I thought to myself hmm... where does that say in the Bible? So I decided when I got home to search it out. It came from the book of Psalm Ch. 121:2-4 but, after reading this I remembered on the 7th day God rested from all his work (or creation). I thought to myself, if he is god and all knowing, all powerful and is a Spirit in which, he doesn't have the same limitations we as humans have then why would he need to rest? Does this contradict Ps. 121?
I don't know if this is just something in the back of my mind that is thinking, "Does god really exist?" Or is this just primitive man trying to answer a hole in their mind, "Where did we all come from? How was life formed? Why am I really here? Does all of this in front of me really matter? Am I just existing to die?
"Oh no no...there is a god! and he is all power..yeah...he's all knowing...(scary he can read my thoughts and knows everything!), he created everything! whoa...he's an amazing god! wait! even better! i better tell everyone!! and they better believe my story about my "god" or they deserve to die and go to a place of torment when they die! right after I go smoke a bowl!! Then, he hallucinates and claims that his god told him to go preach to the people...suddenly, the converts a few followers who are devout men and women to his "god" before you know it...he's fighting wars over people who don't believe in his god and blah blah blah...
Hope this doesn't offend anyone here and I know this sounds rude but, it's an honest question. Now, I am not here asking for someone to prove or disprove "god" or "goddess" or even The Force. But, I wondered to myself does all this exist or is it merely that man wants to have an answer for life after death and the theory of a "god" just fills in that unknown answer and fills in the gap? Is there a heaven or hell? Or is it that we merely get thrown in a hole and that is the end of it. I don't know if this makes sense or not what I am getting at.

I dunno if its meant to be taken literally, but if so, then subjective validation reinforces the appearance of truth to something, as we all need sleep sooner or later - so must God.
But ya know it might have just appeared that God was resting from it, as some things need time to heat soak for example.... so perhaps it depends who observed all this and remembered or wrote it. Perhaps God was checking it for errors on that day which went unseen by the observer, and if any were found the whole lot including the observer would have ceased to exist so no tale would survive to know that process had been happening, nor for how long.
I'd personally think its an artifact of a simple meaning that got overg'd up in translation. It might have just been a phrase to symbolize the 'completion of' the 'most massive and important task' which in nature could be characterized by needing sleep.

Well, I'm not Christian, most likely never will be. But I like some of the lessons it has to teach. It's my thought through reading about the development of the Bible that Psalms was songs, and were written by men expressing their view of G_d. I believe that most of it is the same, myths etc. about man's relationship to man and man's relationship to G_d. I think that is why there are so many different versions. As for Heaven and Hell, I don't believe they exist as has been portrayed, and I don't think ancient Hebrews did either. I think much of it was thrown in or re-interpreted over time as a way to control people. Was it the work of ignorant men, I wouldn't say that. But the work of uneducated men I think is likely. Just like we've gone from believing in a flat earth to the knowledge we have the earth today, minds change and things that were believed fall by the wayside as new evidence presents itself. I don't believe in a singular Adam and Eve, nor do I believe in many of the miracles or the resurrection. I also don't believe you can prove or disprove the existence of G_d, the force, or anything else. You either believe it or you don't. There is no one with knowledge that it's true or false, only those who claim to know it for a fact.

This subject (in general terms) irritates me, and I've long since given up having the discussion with hipsters who insist that "as a christian" I'm a backwards sun worshipper.
But, given that I've gone to the effort of advertising myself as christian at other times here, I feel I may as well reply.
No, in the terms that you have used to describe God - "He" does not exist.
Nor can you buy a bus ticket to Heaven or Hell. They're not "places".
I would say that God is the work of enlightened Man, who identified that the world does not begin and end with our own heartbeats.
Plenty of ignorant men have used weird mysticism and references to God as a substitute for a great many other things in the meantime, but that is hardly God's fault
 The Bible as interpreted by a software programmer....

For me, God exists without question. Or Allah or the Force or whatever you want to call it. I usually use "God" and "He" because that's the most common in my culture.
I also believe God is unknowable. If you can imagine it, that's not Him. Can you imagine sleep? Well then, He didn't do that. Didn't rest, either, cause I can picture rest. But maybe He did a thing kind of like that, or not at all similar but that's the closest word we have. Or maybe it's all allegorical 'cause we just don't have the words or capacity to understand how things really down. I tend toward believing that last one.

Without question I think god exist but, rather like you said River, It's difficult for us to comprehend. I honestly don't think god has a gender preference but, that is popular in culture and I understand that.
I don't know if The Force is ever going to be fully explained and I think like River said I don't think it's possible for anyone to fully comprehend what the will or what the meaning of life or consciousness is all about. It's like reincarnation does anyone remember their former life? no. Does it exist then? Well, my mind would tell me no but, I am not sure because I cannot prove or disprove it because I am a person who believes in Deja-Vu or the feeling like I've been there before yet I know I haven't been. It's like if someone rewind a VHS tape over and over but, yet for certain you know you've been there before but, you don't know how. Anyways, I am getting off topic but, god or The Force is a mystery and maybe we'll never know it all and it seems unlikely.
