Does Britain still seek membership in a strong union?

I was going to post this in the Brexit thread, but it didn't quite fit. This is something I have thought about for several years now. I see the pieces falling into place that could actually bring it about, so I figured it's a good time to talk about it.

So far, the only union of states that I know of that has had any staying power is the North American Union or as it is commonly known, The United States of America. Our constitution has helped facilitate a strong central government while still preserving the sovereignty of the member states. I keep hearing about national sovereignty on the debates before the referendum and in the commentaries after, so I assume that it is as important in the UK as it is to Americans who understand the nature of our union.

So here's my suggestion: the UK or even the members of the UK can join the USA as member states and all they have to do is abide by the US Constitution like the other 50 states. This would give England and Scotland the power of US currency, the power of the US military, and still allow them to govern themselves as they see fit.
Now, I understand that there is a large portion (but not a majority...yet) of people in the US that want to create more laws at the federal level to control the states. They want national ID cards, national control of public land, and national control of individual rights (such as abortion, drugs and gun control to name a few). These are all issues that should be decided by each individual state. The EU and the Soviet Union are two examples of unions that tried to take these powers away from their member states. The USA is still afloat because there are still people here fighting for states'rights.

I have been a proponent of the Canadian territories joining the USA ever since I first heard about NAFTA. The North American Free Trade Agreement would undermine state sovereignty in the USA, but if Canada and Mexico joined the USA, they would get all the benefits of free trade within the USA while still allowing them and us to govern ourselves at the local level.

There are a lot of nuances to this idea, so let's not jump to any conclusions. My favorite aspect of this idea is that adding countries from other continents may necessitate a change of the name from the United States of America to the United States of Earth.
Hmm, you know, this kinda sounds like my "Jedi umbrella religion" idea.

There's a huge assumption being made here, that is, that other countries would have any interest in joining the United States. Our reputation is not exactly stellar in many parts of the world, including much of Canada. As Trump talks about building a wall on the Mexican border, don't be surprised if Canada has the same idea.

The european union stretches outside europe (south america, Caribbean, oceania/pacific, indian ocean, africa, middle east, and atlantic), yet it's still called european union.

I can't imagine anyone in the UK wanting to join the US....

Would you join us instead and abide by our laws? Thought not...

Same. There's an interesting perception playing out in the OP, that Brits just don't share. Like at all.

If self governing territory could they should. Free will and all. Edan I agree with the thought that controll has many names. Myself, I'm looking for a place to grow and learn, free from tyrants. Know of any place?

Out of curiosity who wants to join the US? There are about 15 plus states trying to succeed as we speak. Do u know something I don't? Jk!

Also, Cable, while I admire your impression of the state of being our country ought to be in... it is not... Maybe decades and decades ago, but not now. Our economy is struggling, our civil rights are divided upon strong political lines, and the federal government has far more control over the states than you seem to recognize. As idealistic as it may sound under an idealistic US government (which does not exist), this would only end up causing more harm to the UK than either leaving or staying in the EU could do...
