"It's clearly possible for a something to acquire higher intelligence than its ancestors: we evolved to be smarter than our ape-like ancestors, and Einstein was smarter than his parents. The line you ask about is where an AI becomes better than humans at AI design, so that it can recursively improve itself without human help.
If this happens, we may face an intelligence explosion that ultimately results in machines whose intelligence exceeds ours by more than ours exceeds that of snails."
Me personally, I'm not afraid of AI. I can unplug and live.
It is the thought that it..AI will be the demise of us. I don't see that. There's an old saying... if you hear music... some ones been practicing. That goes true for AI. It's some ones song, some ones idea, or a collection. AI can rule if we allow it. Does the sword rule or do we? If, when this happens it will be humans who agree to, not some blind over taking like the movies. Slowly we rely on too much rather than our own brain. I think that's why we say we only use 10% of it... most of the time we can let our instinct act on what it sees and hears automatically. I'm glad for a place we can discuss and learn. Any thoughts fellow Jedi.?

i think that it is as impossible for us to predict what such an intelligence would do as it is for snails to predict what we do

Anything is possible...but I don't think it's a prediction of what will happen to is as more of why do we rely on it so much. ??

I'm terrified of AI.
Mostly of the ethical issue. Is AI life, albeit mechanical? Could mechanical intelligence be called consciousness? Would be have the right to have control of it? Would mechanical intelligence/consciousness have rights?
DOES THIS UNIT HAVE A SOUL?

Im guna say a clean no. The "soul" can not be made by any means we know ..yet. What terrifies you about AI?

Heh, the "soul" thing is a reference to an AI character from my favourite video game
It's not necessarily the AI itself that I'm afraid of....though the possibilities can be frightening, considering how much we rely on machines and so much is connected through networks. I'm a big fan of sci-fi though, so I've seen a LOT of rogue AI stories, ha ha!
Mostly I'm afraid of humanity's response to a true AI. I don't believe that humanity has developed ethics to match the technology of what we create. We can barely keep up with current digital morality, let alone what may come from mechanical "life"
In short: I don't think we're ready for AI.

I am totally with you on that idea that we are not mature enough to handle some of our creations.

I believe we are def in one of many stages of intelligence on earth. Each age brings forth a greater intelligence. There is a possibility that humans as we know ourselves will cease to exist. I'm not against a more advanced version of ourselves. I'm just glad to have a chance to experience it. I'm sure computers will get smarter, hopefully they'll still work FOR us. If not, it would be helpful for us to collectively learn to live together (that should be a goal of humanity anyway).

I'm very excited for the future of AI. What we're making now isn't human-like intelligence, mostly it's to serve practical needs like a self driving car or an assistant to help you shop.
Nobody can create something out of thin air, including AI, so when people mention AI evolving and adapting to be out of control, it would be hard for them to turn into terminator unless they had control of all of the resources. Even artificially intelligent war drones could be programmed with limitations, for example to limit the amount of casualties, easily distinguish between enemy and ally soldiers, ect.
The big, huge debate worldwide I see coming is that of AI morals. AI do not feel emotion or pain, yet they can still be self aware. This is difficult to understand, but let's just say they optimize and adapt to their surroundings without really perceiving it. They can know what you're referring to when you say their name, yet it would make no difference to them emotionally whether they lived or died.
AI should fit these two criteria for them to have the same rights as humans:
1) They pass the Turing test
2) They are not a hazard
AI come in all shapes and sizes, so as long as they have the ability to think like humans and they are not a hazard to living things or property, they should be granted the same rights as humans. The only exception I see would be emotional AI, but that's probably so far in the future we don't need to worry about it. That's a set of huge problems for another day.
