I love humanity, but I hate humans

- Albert Einstein

lol even smart people can say stupid things

EDIT
let me clarify

this statement might have been brilliant in its original context, (if it is in fact an real quote from A.E.) but it is simplistic in its application here

it attempts to promote the philosophical position that "hating humans" is the natural result of an intelligent mind

well, exactly which humans should i be hating?

the word "humans" means all of us

it means all of us collectively, and it also means all of us individually, as individuals

and if you hate all of us in the collective sense, and also hate all of us as individuals, then you dont really "love humanity" do you?

you would actually despise humanity

so i would like to suggest being be careful about the language that you use, and about thinking that you understand a quote just because it vaguely resembles some generic idea that youve been impressed by

also, where did einstein say this and in what context?

People are complicated.

lol yeah i consider that a simplification too

i think it has truth in it, i dont think it necessarily IS THE TRUTH lol

its contextual

i actually disagreed with its use in the movie, because it was a justification for hiding the fact that humans and ET's had been interacting for decades, with the platitude that "we're lying to them for their own good"

i dont believe in that kind of philosophy, generally

i think it was used only because the movie wanted to keep the "secret agent" theme and they had to explain that somehow

keeping their exciting little hollywood theme was worth promoting the cultural assumption that governments are supposed to lie to people about - well anything that is important really - literally because we are too stupid to handle the the truth

its appealing to be able to put people down in a clever way

but appealing doesnt mean correct, and being cynical is not the same as being wise

Wanted to highlight this!

Wes and I were having a conversation just yesterday about this. Attachment, whether its to people or things, is about identification. Its not so much the "thing" that we are attached to, as it is what we believe that thing says about us. Who are are, who we wish to be. who we wish others to see us as. Its about creating an identity.

And yes, I would agree that attachment is the product of fear.
