Is Christmas no longer a religious holiday?

I think it's become a way to have an excuse to get together with family, as Americans don't set aside much time for their extended families. I see my mom a handful of times per year, and my wife's family even less (We don't get along well. Long story there.), so the holiday is probably the only time aside from birthdays that I'm personally willing to make the drive. I do notice the capitalism that marketing has worked in, and while not a fan, it really is kind of inescapable. I just hate having to get people things because I know they will get me things, even if I ask them not to. Seems we should just trade money.

Frankly, I don't care if Christmas is no longer restricted to Christain doctrine. The spirit of giving and camaraderie has always been a universal endeavor. What bothers me is that it has become hijacked by consumerism. Even traditionally non-religious holidays have fallen under the set of modern media and whatever self-serving Mumbai jumbo they feed us in the name of "entertainment."
I apologize for any anger apparent in that response. If an event exists for a wholesome reason, it matters not whether it is culutural or religious (often they are both). I find nothing good about the cobsumerist culture and its tendency to turn everything into a means of making money and propagating the latest fashion trend.
