I have recently discovered numerology and undertook its different tests, and find it to be remarkably accurate, but do you believe it is just one of those generalized things that are accurate no matter what, or if its legit?

I view it in the same field as Astrology or Iching Coins or Rune Tossings or Taro Card readings.....

Its a neat tool to explore and can open up Ideas you might not of thought of (in that way) before.

But it's just that....A Neat tool that should be used with understanding and not attachment.

tzb posted a very interesting video in the telekinesis thread .
I think it's relevant here as well.

With that, I think all of these kinds of things can be really fun and interesting as entertainment, but I wouldn't base my decisions or outlook on my life on them. :)

I love looking at things like that and taking silly little online quizzes. Not because I believe any of them for a second, but because I find them interesting. Part of that interest is that other people take them very seriously. I had a coworker once who was dead sure that my fiance and I were wrong for each other because I'm an Aries and she's a Taurus.

Most of the time I find those sorts of things to be specific enough that you think "wow, that's pretty good" but vague enough that almost anyone will have the same reaction. It's like the scene in the movie Waterboy when Vicky is talking about a psychic she heard say "'you will be faced with a difficult decision today.' Well we're all faced with difficult decisions everyday, that's like saying you're gonna eat today." They all make me think of that.

It's still kind of interesting to read though, I just don't put any stock in it.

Mostly agreed with other replies, but I'd add a bit...

Taking Runes for example, something I have a lot of personal familiarity, but under the assumption that this could be applied to any of the above mentioned.

One the one side, I strongly believe that the use of runes (a form of oracle, or tool that connects us to information outside of our awareness) connects us to wisdom outside of our person. A way of bridging the gap between the scientific intellect and the metaphysical one.

To play with this in Alan Watts terms, I see the metaphysical capacity of runes as a way for "us" to connect with the rest of "us".

On the flip side, the science side, there's a massive amount of processing power, "Intelligence", and awareness in the subconscious mind. The deep Self, as I think of it. There's a book, 'Blink' by Malcom Gladwell, that covers what he calls the "locked door" (a romantic way of saying we can't get back in there NOW... but maybe we can find the KEY) between the conscious mind and the subconscious. Basically the whole thing is about thin slicing, and the ability o the subconscious to process MASSIVE amounts of data without our conscious mind even realizing it happens.

Instinct, intuition, gut, 6th sense... these are all connected to this thin-slicing power.

In that, Runes can be seen as a method of using a question (focal point), a spread(field of context), and archetypes(generalized meaning concepts tied to symbols) to give our Subconscious enough outside triggers to come up with answers and ideas for our question. It's a way of consciously creating a field within which the subconscious plays, in order to glean some of that super processing power.

So I work with oracles like numerology, astrology, runes, etc, with a dash of skepticism and an honest awareness of the experiences I've had. They're both metaphysical and scientific. Maybe that's the same thing, and the scientists just haven't figured it out yet ;)

I always find those things to be broad and apply to everyone, giving the illusion of being true. I found it as one of those random quizzes.

If it works for you and you are or live better who cares what others think. The value I see is you get some sort of information for you to ponder on and it may very well expand your mind.

I'm intuitive, not many people will be able to convince me it doesn't work for me. For example, I foresee some one is going to discount this statement as not being scientific. :) :P :)

Unconventional perhaps. I'm not sure how others use it, but the closest I've gotten comfortably was the IChing and its cleromancy. But I apply it in quite limited scope just out of curiosity, where my interest is more about patterns then meaning. I might compare the patterns in one context across to what those patterns might best exist in another context.

I think these things are designed to be broad, or idealistic, so that either they have a hard time being wrong, or you want to believe them. This applies, in my opinion, to all oracle types of things and 99% of "personality test" types.
