If I'm understanding this correct these are not sanctioned law enforcement or any organized form of government. They are hackers who stay hidden. Please calling all Jedi help me understand what's going on right now.

From my understanding they are just a group of hackers. They are not sanctioned by anyone but themselves. In fact, I'm pretty sure that they're high on a few federal watch lists. In a highly technologically advanced society I think they could do some damage (like Die Hard 4 level stuff) but against terrorists who live in the dessert I'm not sure what they hope to accomplish. Maybe they can try hacking any money coming to them digitally. It can't all be cash and gold, right?

There not just terrorists in the desert. It was found they were communicating through Facebook and instagram via various codes.
They are not ignorant of technology, and it does well to not underestimate them in there ability to use it. Especially now, in this day and age where you dont even have to be connected to anything to have internet access.
Information, even digital, leaves a trail.
If a group of hackers can get into the apple cloud, if properly motivated and used, im sure they could uncover a good amount of intelligence.
Instead of putting them on federal watchlists, perhaps it would be more beneficial to drop that and ask for there help.

Anonymous is, as has been stated, a group of individuals who are very loosely organized, and have no well-defined leadership. They have no easily identifiable goal, however it seems they attempt to use their hacking skills to correct what they perceive are wrongs.
There are many who surmise that Anonymous is really a CIA-operation. Who really knows, to be honest. And to how much 'good' they do? Meh. They may raise awareness of situations, and can help shed a light, but a great many also think they do more harm than good.

Thank you Khaos. I am always open to having my views challenged and my perceptions opened up to the truth. While I assumed they were damaging I had always assumed that ISIS was a bit more "off grid." I guess I assumed that's what made them harder to stop.
I'm not suggesting that we try to stop Anonymous from trying to take down ISIS, I'm just skeptical of their ability to do so.

Anonymous is a group which, to the best of my knowledge, started on the website 4chan (not safe for work), and they take their title because while 4chan is an online image-based message board, it does not require any login information, calling users "Anonymous". Individual users can choose to take on a name, but it is frowned on. The first major acts of the people were small jokes (such as ordering massive amounts of pizzas to an address, trolling radio personalities, etc) until "Project Chanology", a protest against Scientology. Individuals showing up to in-person events would usually wear a mask in order to hide their identity and remain anonymous.
The title "Anonymous" is taken seriously by some, but Anonymous likes to be very theatrical and tongue-in-cheek while doing anything. They are not an organization. They have no goals and no hierarchy. It's generally nonsensical to attribute a good guy or bad guy label to Anonymous, as their actions can range from harassment of children for laughs to rigging polls for laughs to identifying people who are members of certain organizations or identifying people who do things that they don't like (as was the case with an internet video a few years back where a teenager was abusing animals). They usually make sure that information they get spreads around the internet quickly.
Some Anonymous do things out of a sense of justice. Others do it for laughs. It's a mixed bag.

I don't know what to think about Anonymous in general, but if they're going after ISIS's technology....
Bravo.
