or both?
??

more to the point, is it fair or honest or appropriate to make a distinction between art and entertainment?

can we say something like snoop dog or justin beiber track (or entire career) is ART? or does it just entertain us without actually crossing in to the uncertainty and vulnerability of art?

or does art not actually have to be vulnerable or challenging, or transformative?

what is art? what does art do and what role does it fill? any?

is it different from entertainment; is there a distinction to be made and if so, is it an important one?

can all forms of calculated entertainment be called ART?

also if a person doesnt create the music they perform then are they really an artist or simply a performer?

and again, is there a difference?

what do you think?

People are complicated.

I am entertained by art...

SO, I find them both, to be intertwined...:)

Different concepts I reckon, art can entertain but it does not have to entertain to be art.. while entertainment has to entertain - but is it art? One persons trashy music is another persons treasured tune!! And that's ok, so it probably stops there, otherwise we could look at the legal landscape to define the boundary of what is art, you cannot reproduce others content too much without it being considered a forgery

You could define art as the measure of creative expression in a piece, in which case some music is really just 'programmed' to be popular and not creative beyond the minimum amount required to be legal, but I don't think its the most useful way to define art. I'd have to call genuine 'creative' work to be things like fringe, timeless or high art... just because how each person assess a piece is completely subjective.... unless its a clear rip off and illegal, or some other nature of expression which might be better defined as media - if its more about a message then it's probably media, if it's more about expression then its probably art.

It's Dogg again? Last I knew he was Snoop Lion..
I've been thinking about this topic for a few days after I watched something about how most "singers" are completely autotuned and their "live" shows are actually pre-recorded. Apparently that made a lot of Britney Spears fans angry and they wanted refunds. I can only guess what their answers would be.
I imagine that if I liked a singer they would be both an artist and entertainer to me.. but all the autotune and pre-recorded "live" shows are something else entirely..

i would consider most rappers to be artists....they use a form of poetry (they're lyrics are filled with similes, metaphors, etc....) to describe their experiences and observations of life...

even autotuning is an artform...

just for comparison, jimmy hendrix and eric clapton could make their guitars literally sing...they were artists....their medium was the guitar...

entertainers do something that anyone can do....artists do something that takes skill....

most people can beatbox....few are true artists at it...
