I don't think they're required but as long as they're used in a controlled and safe way and they're not one of those drugs that can cause permanent damage, I see nothing wrong with them.

Yeah hard to over dose usually doesn't cause any permanant damage ,but I often question should some people pull on the anchor sanity? I've often heard it described as mediation is like slowly lifting a sail and psychedelics are like getting on a rocketship.

my response is that if you learn to induce trance without them and most especially if you learn to generally structure or direct the trance without them then if you save them until the end and you do the work of learning the methodology of shamanic ritual of different peoples (which in my estimation includes the works of the lsd experiments) then by the time you e them you wall have set the foundation for a truly life changing experience
in the process of doing that you may actually have the experience youre looking for anyway
which brings a good question
is there a specific experience youre looking for?
basically i want to suggest that the more you put in to developing a functional context for their use the more benefit you will get

i would personally say that of all the options which i have experienced - lsd xtc and psilocybin bybfar psilocybin is what i would recommend
but again if it hasnt been thoroughly considered i urge preparation and CONTEXT
spend time developing trance abilities and applications without ingested assistance
and learn some format for ritual usage
dont just eat a buch of mushrooms and drive around the city
also i admit that thats exactly what me and my friends used to do sort of

That's what I mean by 'in a controlled way'. In cultures that use psychedelics for practices, they have experienced leaders that help and guide the newbies. They're there to answer questions and I'm sure many of them probably dictate when a person is ready for their first experience.
Should an 18 year old American do it on their own or with buddies? Laws aside, probably not. We just don't have the culture to support that kind of thing. That would be pulling the anchor of sanity. But the little I've studied on psychedelics, it seems to be quite the eye-opening experience when used in a proper manner.

I always imagined if dosage levels could be managed perfectly and safe environments controlled it could be a powerful tool for increasing intelligence LOL, but I think its more complicated and more likely to decrease intelligence under normal real world use, especially while its illegal. But I think each type of hallucinogen seems to incorporate elements of all three types being;
Psychedelics - sensory 'flow' (see pic in OP), alternate view of current reality?
Dissociatives - detachment, alternate realities?
Deliriants - hmmm, power, most usually experienced as fear, confusion and general insanity, all realities at once!!?
Different substances have different mixes of the above, and sometimes it can transition across moments of each type. If I knew more about neurochemistry I would probably be able to shed light on why, but its too complicated for me.
More importantly;
Do you know what your actually taking and what strength it is?
Do you know what other substances it badly interacts with?
Do you know what its likely going to do and what it should not do?
Do you have a safe place where you or others will not be put in danger from the effects you might experience?
Do you have a plan if something goes wrong (it might not be related to the drug, but the drug might impair your capacity to react to some other incident)?
So after asking and answering these questions.... if you have some reason that compels you to do it, my thoughts are start small and learn as much about it as you can. I guess the most important question is why bother, but like all questions its good to be informed before trying to give yourself a definitive answer, IMO.

Thoughts on psychedelics. I'm for them. I'm a member of
MAPS
, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. Take a look at the site, I'm sure they can explain it better than me. The bottom line is there is tremendous potential in the proper therapeutic use of psychedelics, and we as a society are in the wrong to demonize them. I look forward to the day they are decriminalized in the US, much like marijuana is becoming now.

There's a multitude of healing, life enhancing and consciousness expanding uses for psychedelics. Abuse is not an argument against proper use.

Yeah I've been seeing a revived interest in using them as a therapeutic method in psychology journals lately. Really interesting stuff on how even a couple doses can have dramatic positive effects.
