Form a young age i always loved swordsmanship and Fencing and while I have fallen out of practice in recent years I wonder how many of you out there have studied it and your thoughts on the styles and forms presented in Star Wars?
Personally favor Kenjutsu (Japanese Swordsmanship) leaning on Iaido... Seeing as light-sabers don't have saya and that the blade is ignited the importance of a Draw cut is pretty much lost.

I did a few lesson's at Kendo many years ago, and I like playing with staff's but never had any training, nor any real effort at it. I think I got the bug from playing golf from a young age :huh:
Swords no, but immersion in 'engagement' yes. For me that concept of dueling is instead focused on fighter jet dogfights LOL. But as a Star War's fan and Jediist, I do love the imagery and history of swords. It's a topic I like to contemplate, but yea more broadly for all types of 'engagements' whether it be h2h, or fast jets.
I actually don't ascribe personally to the Star Wars Form's as people build them up from conventional sword techniques, but it does look kewl. Lol, I use the Star Wars 'Forms' as a template for my own system :side:
Jediism as a path for me is largely about improving from the past, and so for me a system like lightsaber theory would gain advantage from some new approach and angles;

As for swordsmanship, it's cool and all that. I can think of 100 things that you'll use more often right off the top of my head like: meditation, yoga, herbology, climatology, etc. I guess one day I will know all that stuff and I can pick up sword study...
Here's everything you ever wanted to know about swordsmanship in 8min:

Well the star wars movies have people flying while swinging light sabers. It's hardly worth studying unless you can fly or levitate or what not. The swords can cut throught 12" of steel... I guess it's just a useless legend.RollFizzlebamf wrote: Form a young age i always loved swordsmanship and Fencing and while I have fallen out of practice in recent years I wonder how many of you out there have studied it and your thoughts on the styles and forms presented in Star Wars?

The video seems to be a hybrid between a meditative form and a combat form, but I think it falls short on both accounts. As a meditative form, the transition between movements doesn't seem to flow smoothly. I would have problems keeping the energy flowing if I were to follow it step by step. As a combat form, I didn't see much in defensive moves and the offensive strikes lacked any follow through. Lightsabers are not real, and as such, if you want to train in swordsmanship you need to use real sword techniques.
I have been working on a jedi meditation project, both with and without sword, and hopefully will have it complete sometime this summer.

Well the Idea was largely and academic one of Lightsaber combat is mostly choreography but seeing as we are taking a fictional concept ie the force it might be interesting to consider one of the most defining characteristics of a Jedi Knight and the object by which they are recognized IE the Lightsaber from a real world perspective.
Style Technique and application. Yes there are always more practical things to consider but some times it nice to take a walk on the fanciful side of things.
and that is not everything you need to know about swordsplay lol. but it is a good example of Taichi form's for the Jian a Chinese straight sword.
