you don't need to be so melodramatic lol.
Here's an idea, imagine telling a guy from the 1970's about the smartphone, what it can do, it's wifi, texting, organising, shopping, social networking, calling, etc.
I'm sure there would be a person asking the same question or making the same melodramatic statement. Thing is, though smart phones, for the average person aren't impossible to turn off or put down " just shut it off and enjoy yourself" or in cinemas for example. People know when to put something down, ( and apparently it knows when to put us down
).
