When I was reading this paragraph I thought of Piers Anthony and his Incarnations of Immortality series. The first seven books each focus on one of seven supernatural "offices" (Death, Time, Fate, War, Nature, Evil and Good) in a fictional reality and history parallel to ours.
They attempt to answer some of these questions and they are fun to read.

Note that I'm not arguing that actions have no benefits or ill benefits. I'm just arguing that these are benefits of utility and not of morality.
