I live at the bottom of american society economically....therefore I'm perpetually surrounded by misery, suffering, etc...poverty brings it out of everyone...being constantly surrounded by it makes it difficult to sense anything else...but yes it does feel like a "revolution" is just on the other side of the fence...whether the fence falls or holds up is a matter of the right trigger....

Filibusters and shutdowns are foolish, childish antics of rich spoiled brat politicians that have no clue at all of what the people want...but yeah most shutdowns occur when the president and congressional majority are of opposing parties...

The worst part is that the spoiled brats still get paid a ridiculous amount for causing the shut down while the people that actually do the work to keep things going have to stay home unpaid....

We shouldn't be so quick to blame the Republicans. They caused it in the first place, but the Democrats are perfectly happy to keep it going. They shut down all of the government websites for no reason, spent money closing spaces that are normally not guarded anyway (like monuments that are open 24/7 for anyone to just walk up to), and now they're closing the ocean. The ocean? Really? The Republicans shut us down, but the Democrats are making sure we experience inconveniences so we can all blame the Republicans. Most shutdowns last 1-3 days, but the Democrats are now refusing to take anything less than 100% of their demands before opening up the government again. Basically everyone on both sides is being childish. They need to learn to play nice. On the other hand, there are apparently some groups already calling for an armed coup, so maybe we really won't have a government in a bit.

An armed coup won't work...they have to be hit where it actually hurts...in their political career and in their wallet...an armed coup would create change but at a heavy price...then there would be the matter of who would lead afterwards...

Honestly I think we need a government setup like they had in starship troopers

"Service guarantees citizenship".....

At least the military is decisive...for better or worse

Just like in the Spartan society, where one wasn't guaranteed citizenship. Both men and women were brought up to serve their country.

And what happens to those who are barred from service due to the militaries standards?

well, to use the starship troopers ex again, there was civil service as an alternative to mil service: clerical, tech, scientific work. the point was that that person earned the right to call themselves a citizen with all that that entailed with either route.

as deso pointed out military isn't the only way to serve...its just the first one everyone jumps to...there's more civilians working for the government than military...

What I would *love* to see is a civil service academy. There are multiple military academies that do a good job of training highly qualified candidates with a desire to serve. I'd be pleased as punch to help fund an institution that could turn out civil servants of similar caliber, drive, and ethical grounding.

I caveat this with the understanding that there are PLENTY of exceptions to what I wrote above. What I mean is that I'd like to see the same focus on civil servitude as I do military service. An institution dedicated to recruiting, training, and turning out superior public servants.

Jedi Knight

The self-confidence of the warrior is not the self-confidence of the average man. The average man seeks certainty in the eyes of the onlooker and calls that self-confidence. The warrior seeks impeccability in his own eyes and calls that humbleness. The average man is hooked to his fellow men, while the warrior is hooked only to infinity.
