I believe the best book I've ever read, is the book I'm reading now.

Fifty Shades of Gray is that good, huh?

I deserve that after such a vague post. Let me clarify. The best book depends on what interests you today. Five years ago I would have told you The prophet, two years ago The Tibetan book of living and dying but today maybe Mystery teachings from the living earth.

We are forever changing and so should the books we read.

It is way too difficult to choose just one book.

That being said, maybe I will try reading fifty shades of grey. :P

I really enjoyed Nana Veary's Change We Must, so I'd probably recommend that first.

Though, like Lykeios, I'm also a big fan of The Tao of Pooh. :)

Both of which are in TotJO's library!

Four pages in and nobody mentioned The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams yet?

Better to leave questions unanswered than answers unquestioned

One book to rule them all?

Paradise Lost

If my home were to catch on fire tonight then my very old, tattered, dog-eared and scribbled-on college copy (the approximate size and weight of a house-brick) would be all I'd be carrying on my way out of the window.

You are my new favourite person.
I have an 1800s copy of Paradise Lost that's barely holding together but it would totally be the first thing I saved in a fire.. (well the first non-living thing.. I have a zoo to save first).

Otherwise, I would bring
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (non-fiction) and
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice (fiction) which is completely my favourite book.

"Evil is always possible. And goodness is eternally difficult."

I'll give one fiction and one non-fiction.

Fiction: The Lord of the Rings (buy it as one big book to make it count as just one. :P )

Non-Fiction: The Book of Five Rings as translated by Stephen Kauffman.

I seem to have a thing for rings.

Non-fiction: If I stay
Fiction: Girl with the Dragon tattoo series

These are my two recommendations. If you love mystery, romance, violence, or sadness these books are for you.

Excellent author. He wrote Custer Died for Your Sins. Dee Brown wrote Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

"O Great Spirit, Help me always to speak the truth quietly, to listen with an open mind when others speak, and to remember the peace that may be found in silence"

This book, seriously, is amazing. If you could only pick one "funny" book to learn life lessons from, it should be this or something by Pratchett.

My picks are:
Fiction - Frank Herbert's Dune . It is not an exaggeration to say that this book completely changed my life.
Non-Fiction - An interesting little book called F**k It: The Ultimate Spiritual Way .

When in New Orleans at a conference last month, I discovered this book on Alan Watts. It is a collection of twelve essays/articles by a variety of scholars.

Alan Watts - Here and Now: contributions to psychology, philosophy and religion, edited by Peter J. Columbus and Donadrian L. Rice, State University of New York Press, 2012.

The book that got me back into reading Fantasy:

The Eye of the Hunter by Dennis L. McKiernan.

Loved that book, man. Read it so many times. :D

It was the first book I read where the author jumps back and forth in time through the story, instead of it just being one long piece in a continuous flow of events. I miss that book. Time to pull it back out again.
