Protest the past was created by Brenna
"A Florida pastor was arrested Wednesday as he drove a pickup truck towing a large barbecue-style grill filled with kerosene-soaked Qurans to a park, where the pastor had said he was planning to burn 2,998 of the Muslim holy books_ one for every victim of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks."

Im struggling to understand this. perhaps im just being dense....

Why? I just cant fathom it.

I watched the video interview with one of the people who was attending the "burn ceremony", and I simply dont get it. What are they expecting the action to achieve?

Walking, stumbling on these shadowfeet

Part of the seduction of most religions is the idea that if you just say the right things and believe really hard, your salvation will be at hand.

lol I love it when people play "it's beyond my understanding" card.

It's fairly easy. I'm not saying I agree with them but I can think of a reason why.

They blame the muslims for 9/11, they're Christian, they believe in God

they think burning these books is like a Godly thing or whatever to condemn the "satanic" muslims and praise God.

NOTE: I am just as disgusted as you are. I just don't pretend I'm above any type of action.

Now I'll also say

what a bunch of idiots. Read the Quran ( koran, coran etc) myself as a teenager. Actually liked the direction it took as an abrahamic book, was interesting. This was done out of fear and ignorance.

I also ask, why bring this up? We know it happens, we all agree that it's stupid. I just don't see the point to a thread where we all just agree and tut.

Think we should just arrest them... oh wait we already did that

after living a life in a family that is filled with the same ideals and attitudes as this i can say from personal experience that most of the time they are just looking for the shock value of the act, or even hope for a very negative reaction from the Muslim community around them. that way they can justify in their own minds their world-view. I get told constantly that i am going to hell because i have a different point of view. In my opinion it is a sad commentary on the state of the world, more importantly on the state of this country that was founded on religious freedom, (yes i know, they probably didnt think of anyone not being Christian when they wrote it) that these things still happen.

;) the reason I bring it up because Ive never heard of this happening. And im bewildered by it. I get the "politics" behind it. ie. Muslims are responsible for all evil. Wasnt quite what I meant. Im more wondering is what exactly are they trying to achieve by doing it.

An attack of islam, simple.

Stuff like this happens quite a lot. Backlash usually gets the law more. Old Catholic Priest, Nathan Monk gets trouble for arguing against it till he had to step down from clergy

Because it's a much smarter thing to do than declaring war to two countries an bombing the crap out of a few others?

There is no human right to kill or destroy whoever you hold responsible for someone else's actions. But we have a human right to express ourselves.

As such, I would like to ask the following question: In what way is it wrong for someone to purchase property and destroy it as a means of expression? (Besides the environmental factor?)
Is book burning (by one old guy lol) considered a violent protest?

His right to protest (in the US, of all places!) should unequivocally be greater than any needs the military may have. I find it hard to believe the guy was arrested exclusively for mishandling fuel.

Convictions are more dangerous foes of truth than lies.

Please, elaborate =)

Also, I wonder why he did it because of the 9/11 attacks. Its not that there aren't any better reasons to burn 3k Qurans. In fact, I know of a gentleman who found a purely idealistic reason to burn 40k of them - and while I find the action a little... outdated, barbaric, so to say, there sure are some interesting reasons to do it, far better than vengeance.

Better to leave questions unanswered than answers unquestioned

I dont think Im explaining what Im actually trying to understand very well. I'll be back....

Edit -

My brother is Christian and believes that anything to do with Islam is evil and destructive. My sister is Atheist and thinks both Christians and Muslims are nuts and ignores the whole thing, and I dont believe that the actions of some are representative of the whole. Three people, same upbringing in the same house, three different faiths with totally different view points on the same issues.

I think im curious about the potency of the religious Koolaid. What is it about Islam and Christianity's influence that encourages such aggression in religions supposedly founded on the principals of peace and compassion?

focused on a different side of the spirituality. It didn't feel the need to apologise for everything it said etc.

Speaking of Muslim racism. Found this on upworthy
